UNIVERSITY DIRECTORY SURVEY:

The 2008-09 university telephone directory was recently distributed to campus offices and residence halls. In order to gauge the usage preference of the directory, hard copy or online, please complete the one-question survey at

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:

Volunteers are needed for the 2009 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 10 and 11 in the UNI-Dome. The meet will include Division I, II, III, NAIA, JUCO, NCWA and Women’s Divisions. Although volunteers are encouraged to stay for an entire shift, any amount of volunteered time will be appreciated. PARK-AND-RIDE REMINDER:

DINING GIFT CARDS:

Gift cards are available for UNI dining centers and convenience stores. Gift cards can be purchased at the 23rd Street Market in Commons, at Chat's, Prexy's and Essentials in Maucker Union and at Biscotti's in Redeker Center. They can be purchased for any amount over $10.

MCELROY FELLOWSHIP:

Application materials are available for the McElroy Fellowship at www.grad.uni.edu. Candidates must be graduates or graduating seniors of a liberal arts program and intend to pursue graduate study toward a Ph. D. at an accredited university. The application deadline is Friday, Jan. 30. For more information, contact the Graduate College at 273-2748.

 

WASHINGTON CENTER INTERN ABROAD:

Apply for a Washington Center intern-abroad program in one of four cities--London, England; Oxford, England; Quebec City, Canada; or Sydney, Australia. Students interning abroad through The Washington Center during summer 2009 will attend a brief seminar which introduces them to the U.S. capital and their destination city prior to flying out. CAPSTONE IN NICARAGUA:

Are you interested in working directly with children residing in orphanages, women trying to break free from prostitution and aid organizations in one of the poorest Latin American countries? If so, consider applying for the two-week July Capstone in Nicaragua. "Family and Community Development" with Carol Cook will examine the social situation in the capital of Managua. Students also will visit a dump city and work with the community forced to live there after a volcano destroyed their mountain-side village. OFFICE-FURNITURE AUCTION:

UNI will hold a surplus office-furniture auction at 10 a.m., Monday, Dec. 15, at the former Campus Supply warehouse (Daisy Dairy) located on University Avenue about one-half mile west of Hudson Road. An opportunity to preview the items will be at 9 a.m. Items include wood and metal desks, book shelves, file cabinets, chairs, tables and a few old unique items. Buyers are responsible for removing purchased items from the building by 4 p.m. Payment must be made in cash (good check) before removal. A valid photo ID is required to get a bidding number. VARIETY TELEVISION SHOW:

A variety show with audience participation will take place from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 17, in the Performance Studio, 041 Lang Hall. COMMENCEMENT:

DISCOVER DIVERSITY DISCUSS:

Discover Diversity Discuss will meet from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 12, at the UNI Museum to discuss "Escape" (Carolyn Jessop and Laura Palmer) and "Stolen Innocence" (Elissa Wall and Laura Pulitzer), both about breaking away from a polygamous sect. All are welcome, even without having read the books.

EXHIBITIONS/FILMS:

B.F.A. EXHIBITION:

"B.F.A. Exhibition" is a UNI Gallery of Art exhibition featuring a variety of media. The exhibition will run through Saturday, Dec. 20. Participants include Lucas James Baumann (performance art) and Jessica McCarty (photography). Free and open to the public.

 

OUR WORLD IN FOCUS:

Celebrate the cultural diversity of people with this exhibition featuring "Our World in Focus; People of Iowa, the United States and the World" photography contest submissions. Prizes will be awarded at the opening reception at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 10, at the University Museum. The exhibition will be on display through Saturday, Jan. 31.

LECTURES/PRESENTATIONS:

'THREE CUPS OF TEA' AUTHOR TO VISIT:

Greg Mortenson, author of "Three Cups of Tea," will visit UNI Thursday, Feb. 12 for an evening lecture. Time and location TBD. The visit is part of his national book tour promoting his two new children's books -- a young readers adaptation of "Three Cups of Tea" and "Listen to the Wind." PERFORMING ARTS:

NEW HORIZONS BAND CONCERT:

The New Horizons Band will offer its winter concert at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 15, in the Great Hall, GBPAC. Under the direction of Diana Blake, the New Horizons Band features musicians 55 and older from all over Iowa. This event is free and open to the public.

 

UNI CHILDREN'S CHOIR WINTER CONCERT:

The UNI Children's Choir will offer its winter concert, under the direction of Michelle Swanson, at 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 19, in Bengtson Auditorium, Russell Hall. This event is free and open to the public.

DE-STRESS DAYS:

De-stress with free mini-massages, a walk in the labyrinth or by playing with animals from the Cedar Bend Humane Society from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday, Dec. 15 through Wednesday, Dec. 17, in Maucker Union. Brought to you by Wellness and Recreation Services.

INTRAMURAL OPEN PRE-SEASON BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT:

Open to students, faculty, staff; men's and women's divisions. A mandatory managers' meeting will take place at 4 p.m., Monday, Jan. 12, in SEC 246. Registration takes place Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 13 and 14, in the Intramural Office, WRC 161. Play begins Tuesday, Jan. 20, in the WRC South Courts. There is a $20 entry fee and a two game guarantee.

 

INTRAMURAL 5-ON-5 BASKETBALL:

A mandatory managers' meeting will take place at 4 p.m., Monday, Jan. 12, in SEC 246. Registration will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 13 and Wednesday, Jan.14, in the Intramural Office, WRC 161. Play begins Wednesday, Jan. 28, at the WRC courts. There are Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday divisions with Men's AA, Women's A & B, Men's A & B and co-rec 4-on-4 half court.

 

INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL OFFICIALS WANTED:

Open to men and women interested in officiating 5-on-5 basketball league games. The pay is $7.25 per hour. Interested people must attend one "court work" session at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 13 or Wednesday, Jan. 14, WRC 204 and South Courts 5 and 6. They must also take a rules test at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 15, in WRC Room 204.

 

INTRAMURAL SPRING BOWLING LEAGUES:

Join a Wednesday or Friday bowling league. Four-person men or women teams; handicap scoring. A mandatory managers' meeting will take place at 4 p.m., Monday, Jan. 12, in SEC 246. Registration will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 13 and Wednesday, Jan.14, in the Intramural Office, WRC 161. The cost is $6 per bowler, per day, for three lines. League play begins at 3:15 p.m., Jan. 21 and 23, at Valley Park Lanes in Cedar Falls.
