EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & PROVOST CANDIDATE VISIT:

James Mackin, a candidate for the executive vice president and provost position, will interview on campus Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 3 and 4. Mackin is the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. During a public forum from 3 to 4:15 p.m., Monday, Nov. 3, in Lang Auditorium, Mackin will address "What are the key opportunities and challenges in public higher education, and how would you as a candidate work with the university community to address them?" OPEN FORUM FOR ASSOCIATE PROVOST CANDIDATE:

Breena Coates, candidate for the associate provost for faculty affairs position, will be on campus Tuesday, Nov. 4, and Wednesday, Nov. 5. A presentation and open forum will be held at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 4, in Seerley 115. All are welcome to attend.

STUDENT INFORMATION SYSTEM UPDATE:

The SIS Evaluation Team has completed campus presentations by two software vendors -- Oracle/Peoplesoft and Sungard/Banner. Reference checks are done, and the team is reviewing written proposals and gathering follow-up information. Both software systems are still under consideration. NEW DIVERSITY COUNCIL APPOINTED BY PRESIDENT ALLEN:

A new Diversity Council has been appointed by President Allen. The council will provide leadership and coordination to achieve the university's diversity-related goals. Council members are interim executive vice president and provost James Lubker; vice president for administration and finance Tom Schellhardt; vice president for student affairs Terry Hogan; and vice president for university advancement Bill Calhoun; Clarence Lobdell III, NISG vice president; Inez Murtha, director of student support services; and Leah Gutknecht, assistant to the president, compliance and equity management. Responsibility for chairing the council will rest initially with Hogan, but will rotate in the future among the vice presidents. The council will meet monthly and will update the president quarterly. It will report annually to the president and the university community. To ensure broad participation and support for planned initiatives, the council will form and charge a diversity advisory committee, and will appoint a chair who will also serve on the council.

RESMANIA:

UNI Programming Board is sponsoring ResMania, Nov. 3 through 8, a spirit week for those living in the residence halls. Students are encouraged to dress up each day: Monday, wear pajamas; Tuesday, wear red, white and blue (don't forget to vote); Wednesday, ugly sweater day; Thursday, dress-up day; Friday, wear green; Saturday, purple pride day. Show spirit at the first UNI women's basketball game on Wednesday, Nov. 5, by getting loud in the McLeod; packing the UNI-Dome at 4:05 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8 and support the football team. Purple and gold beads will be handed out at the northeast entrance of the UNI-Dome.

VOTE FOR T.C.:

Visit www.capitalonebowl.com/vote/main to cast a write-in vote for T.C. in the Capital One Mascot Challenge. When supporters first visit the site, a ballot must be cast for each of the six races for the main mascot-challenge election. After voting, select Iowa under the state drop-down menu and UNI's T.C. as a write-in candidate. The write-in election winner will be announced Jan. 1 and a $1,000 cash prize will be awarded to the winning school's mascot program and automatic selection into the 2009 Capital One Mascot Challenge. Votes can be cast once per day.

"Our World in Focus," UNI Museums' annual photography contest and exhibition, will celebrate the cultural diversity of people Jan. 10-31. Deadline for entries is Wednesday, Nov. 12. PORTUGUESE FILM SERIES:

The UNI Portuguese Club will host the final installment of its Conexões Film Series at 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 11, in the College Eye Room of Maucker Union. "Caramuru: A Invencão do Brasil," (The Invention of Brazil) is a comedy about a Portuguese map illustrator who reaches the Brazilian coast after his caravel sinks. He is saved by the Indian chief Itaparica. The film is in Portuguese with English subtitles and is free and open to the public.

EARTH SCIENCE SEMINAR:

Chad Heinzel and students will give a presentation on "Exploration of the Central Rocky Mountains: A UNI Earth Science Adventure, May 2008," at 4 p.m., Monday, Nov. 3, in Latham Hall, Room 125. Last year's Department of Earth Science spring trip focused on the geology and natural history of the Central Rocky Mountains of Wyoming, Utah and Idaho.

NATURAL RESOURCE RESEARCH AND MANAGEMENT SEMINAR:

Karl Delong, a retired professor from Grinnell College, will discuss "Species Response to Intense Restoration of an Oak-Hickory Woodlot to a Closed Savanna," at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 5, in the Tallgrass Prairie Center, Room 9. Delong will discuss the restoration work he started in 1993 on a 40-acre heavily grazed woodlot. Clearing and burning allowed for the return of endemic forbs and grasses both naturally and from seed. American bluesman Kenny Neal brings his axe to Waterloo's Electric Park Ballroom at 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 22, for the 2008 Fall Blues Blowout, presented by the Friends of KUNI/KHKE. INTRAMURAL 5 ON 5 OPEN CO-REC INDOOR SOCCER TOURNAMENT:

Play intramural soccer Sunday, Dec. 7, at the WRC South Courts. Open to students, faculty and staff; $20 per team. Entry forms are available at the Intramural Office, WRC161, the week of Nov. 17. WRS OFFERING FITNESS ASSESSMENTS:

The WRS is providing fitness assessments for any interested faculty/staff/students now through Nov. 6. They can be scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesdays and Thursdays; and from 3 to 6 p.m., Wednesdays. The tests include body composition and measurements and strength, flexibility and cardio testing.
