NEWS:

BEWARE OF 'BANK' SCAM SOLICITING E-MAIL ACCOUNT INFORMATION:

UNI's ITS-Network Services has been contacted about a new e-mail phishing scam. The e-mail involves a message that says it's from a local credit union or bank and tells you that your account has been disabled. It provides a "local" telephone number to call. The number is likely a virtual number with an automated attendant to collect your account number and other personal information. KANGAS NAMED UNI DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS:

Christie Kangas has been named UNI director of admissions. Kangas currently is director of undergraduate admission at Texas State University-San Marcos. She will assume her new duties at UNI on May 15.

UNI REACCREDITATION PROCESS UNDERWAY:

Every 10 years, UNI conducts a self-study in preparation for reaccreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. That process is underway in preparation for a reaccreditation site visit in spring, 2011. Preparing institutional reaccreditation requires support and assistance from all programs and units on campus. A steering committee of faculty and staff is coordinating this process. NEW UNI ADMISSIONS PROGRAM TARGETS TRANSFER STUDENTS:

In March, UNI and North Iowa Area Community College joined forces to make it more convenient for NIACC students who want to earn a bachelor's degree to transfer to UNI. NEW SUMMER COURSE ON GENOCIDE SATISFIES LIBERAL ARTS CORE:

010:159 Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Genocide: Case Studies will be held on campus from 8 a.m. to noon, July 7–31. The class will feature a variety of activities, including lectures, open discussion, structured student-centered discussion tasks, guest presentations, and viewing of films and Web sites. COLLECTING USED LAPTOPS FOR NICARAGUAN STUDENTS:

The student organization Muchas Manos Light Work is collecting good used laptops and digital cameras for teaching purposes in Siares, Nicaragua. If you have a usable laptop with windows software and the battery unit or a digital camera with cords for computer pickup to donate, please drop off at the NISG office in Maucker Union, CBB 261 or in the Management Department office on the second floor of the CBB (Room 231). The units will be taken to Nicaragua with this year's capstone group in early May. Muchas Manos Light Work is a non-profit student organization, so donations are tax deductible. Toasted sub sandwiches are now available at the Red Hat Deli at 23rd Street Market, located in the Commons. This is in response to customer requests for this option.

Essentials in Maucker Union has put together a special school supply package every Tuesday for $2. Our most popular items are bundled to save you money. Packages change weekly and include notecards, notebooks, highlighters, pens, and mechanical pencils.

"Thinking About Graduate School?" will take place from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 8, in the Maucker Union Old Central Ballroom C. GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP IN EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLGY:

ITS-Educational Technology has an opening for a graduate assistant during the next academic year. This assistantship entails a 20-hour workweek that involves presenting computer workshops to students, faculty and staff at UNI. Payment includes a stipend and tuition scholarship. Internships are available with Camp Adventure Youth Services within Early Childhood & School Age programs in Germany, England, Italy, Portugal and Belgium. Students receive a living stipend of approximately $2,600 for 17

Under the direction of UNI School of Music professor of trumpet Randy Grabowski, the UNI Trumpet Ensemble will offer a spring concert at 8 p.m., Tuesday, April 8, in the GBPAC Davis Hall. Under the direction of conductor Rebecca Burkhardt, the Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra will offer its spring concert at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 9, in the GBPAC Great Hall. CHORAL INVITATIONAL:

This high-energy Nashville-based band was named 2005 International Bluegrass Music Association's Entertainers of the Year. INTERNATIONAL DANCE CONCERT:

UNI's International Dance Theatre will present its annual spring concert at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, April 12, and 2 p.m., Sunday, April 13, in the Lang Hall Auditorium. Featured will be a set of dances, originally choreographed for the Ballet Folklorico de Mexico. The program also will include a suite of dances to music by Henry Mancini. The company will present the premiere of "Oceanna," choreographed by director Daniel Wells. It is named after his grandmother who was born on the ocean as her parents immigrated to the United States. GYPSY:

"Gypsy," with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Arthur Laurents, returns to the stage in this production at 2 and 7 p.m., Sunday, April 13, in the GBPAC. WEST AFRICAN DRUM ENSEMBLE AND PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE:

UNI'S ORCHESIS DANCE COMPANY SPRING SHOW:

UNI's Orchesis Dance Company's annual spring show will take place at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 18, and 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Saturday, April 19, at the Oster Regent Theater on Main Street in Cedar Falls. Tickets will be sold by Orchesis members for $5 in advance or can be purchased for $8 at the door. UNI VIOLINISTS FROM BRAZIL:

Walter and Wagner Caldas are twin brothers from Brazil. The brothers' violin talent was recently discovered and now they are students at UNI studying music. The Caldas twins will perform at 7 p.m., Friday, April 18, at the Cedar Falls AMVETS #49 (East 18th Street) as part of the World Fair. Sponsored by Over the Rainbow Health and Educational Services. RACE -- THE POWER OF AN ILLUSION FILM AND DISCUSSION SERIES:

Part 2 "The Story We Tell" in this series will be shown from noon to 1:30 p.m., Monday, April 7, at the CME (MAU 109). This is an eye-opening tale of how deep social inequalities came to be rationalized as natural. The film looks at the creation of the idea of race. A discussion will follow. CROW FORUM:

CROW Forum will take place at noon, Monday, April 7, in Maucker Union, North Room. The Outstanding Graduate Research Paper on gender winner, Emily Cram, will present, "Corpulent Counter-Publics: Fat Politics and Stretching the Discursive Economy." Women’s & Gender Studies Program sponsors the Current Research on Women & Gender Forum Series. EARTH SCIENCE SEMINAR:

Harry J. Hillaker, state climatologist, Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship, will discuss "A Brief History of Weather Records and Climate Trends in Iowa” at 4 p.m., Monday, April 7, in LAT 125. Presented by the Department of Earth Science.

'BECOMING AMERICAN: THE CHINESE EXPERIENCE':

In honor of Asian American Heritage Month, the CME is screening a three-part PBS documentary, "Becoming American: The Chinese Experience." The three-part series will be shown from noon to 2 p.m., and from 3 to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Friday, April 9 through 11, at the CME (109 MAU). The documentary series is a story of struggle and triumph, progress and setbacks, discrimination and assimilation of Chinese immigrants. 'PORRAIMOS: EUROPE'S GYPSIES IN THE HOLOCAUST':

This film will be shown at 7 p.m., Monday, April 7, in Seerley 115. "Porraimos" is the first American documentary to expose how the pseudo-science of eugenics was used to persecute not only Jews, but also Gypsies. Using interviews with Austrian, Czech and German Gypsy survivors, as well as photographs and films from the Reich Department of Racial Hygiene, this video reveals the oppression of the Gypsies -- their registration and segregation, their sterilization, the medical experiments, and their eventual murder. Free and open to the public. Presented by the UNI Holocaust Remembrance and Education Program.

'PARAGRAPH 175':

This film will be shown at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 8, in Seerley 115. Actor Rupert Everett provides the narration for this disquieting documentary that shines a light on the Third Reich's vicious persecution of male homosexuals during World War II. The title comes from an arcane, 1871 German statute making sodomy punishable by incarceration (with the ultimate goal to eradicate gays completely). Only a handful of survivors -- now frail and withered -- remain to recount their traumatic tales in this poignant film. Directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman. In English, German and French, with English subtitles. Free and open to the public. Presented by the UNI Holocaust Remembrance and Education Program.

The Clothesline Project will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday, April 8 and 10, in the Maucker Union Old Central Ballroom. This international initiative honors survivors and victims of intimate violence. SPANISH FILM AND TAPAS NIGHT:

Sigma Delta Pi, the Spanish honor society, is hosting a Spanish film and tapas night at 7 p.m., Sunday, April 13, at the CME (MAU 109). The film is "Pan's Labyrinth" and a variety of Spanish tapas will be served. The event is free and all are welcome.

This documentary will be shown at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 9, in Seerley 115. It combines first-person descriptions of events with historical footage, photos and eye-witness accounts of the persecution and resistance of Jehovah's Witnesses during the Nazi regime. The film tells about Jehovah’s Witnesses who put the Bible's principles, commandments and prophecies ahead of the Nazi regime laws. Free and open to the public. CEDAR VALLEY DISCUSS AND DISCOVER DIVERSITY: READING AND SHARING:

Cedar Valley Discuss and Discover Diversity: Reading and Sharing will meet from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., Monday, April 14, at the UNI Museum. Participants will discuss the novel "Sold" by Patricia McCormick. An ordinary childhood is interrupted when family crops fail and her stepfather sells Lakshmi into childhood prostitution. This YA/Adult novel grew out of McCormick's research into child slavery and prostitution. Participants need not have read the book to attend. Entry and weigh-ins will take place from 6 to 7 p.m., Monday, April 14, in the WRC free weight room 153. Weight classes for men are: below 135, 136-150, 166-180, 181-195, 196-210 and 211 and above. Weight classes for women will be determined after weigh-in by the number of entrees. The competition starts at 7:05 p.m., in the WRC 153. Winners are the best lift at each weight class. If there are not enough participants in a weight class, two classes will be combined; weight pushed in pounds divided by body weight will determine the winner.
