NEWS:

DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS CANDIDATE FORUMS:

The final two candidates for the position of director of admissions will be on campus for public presentations on these dates: 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 11, in the CME conference room, Henry Cantu, director, student enrollment services, The University of Texas at San Antonio; and 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., Thursday, March 13, in the CME conference room, Scott Burke, director of admissions, Clayton State University. Candidates will speak for 15 to 20 minutes, followed by a question and answer session.

 

UNI TO DEVELOP NEW STUDENT INFORMATION SYSTEM:

Planning will soon begin to replace UNI's aging Student Information System. This software system supports academics by meeting core functional needs like course registration, grade reporting, student recordkeeping, application for enrollment processing, financial aid awarding, student billing and degree auditing. A series of meetings, interviews and workshops will occur between now and mid April. These activities will lead to the development of a Web-based instrument through which interested members of the university community can assess our particular system needs. ACADEMIC ADVISING COUNCIL CREATED:

Last year UNI's advising services went through an external evaluation by the National Academic Advising Association. One of the Association's recommendations was to create an advisory council to the Provost, charged with reviewing and assessing advising services, as well as with promoting the development and recognition of professional and faculty advisors. As a result of this recommendation, Interim Provost Lubker recently created an Undergraduate Academic Advising Council to help facilitate improvements to UNI's advising services. The group is meeting regularly, and any comments or suggestions should be directed to Mike Licari michael.licari@uni.edu. AUTOMOBILE SAFETY UPDATE:

The UNI Police Department will join forces with more than 320 other Iowa law enforcement agencies in the Special Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP), Thursday through Monday, March 13-17. This campaign will involve 24-hour seat belt enforcement, with special attention given to impaired driving on St. Patrick's Day. MID-TERM GRADE REPORTS:

Mid-term grade reports (D&F grade notices) for the spring semester have been delivered electronically to students. These notices will no longer be sent through the mail on paper forms. Students whose instructors reported they are receiving a D or F in their course(s) should have received an e-mail notification and a MyUNIverse announcement regarding the availability of their mid-term grade report in MyUNIverse. To view a mid-term grade report, students log into MyUNIverse and click on the "Mid-semester Grade Report" link in the My Personal Records section. Students with no D or F grades reported by their instructors will not have a mid-semester grade report. See http://myuniverse.uni.edu.

 

SYSTEM MAINTENANCE:

Due to system maintenance scheduled for Saturday, March 15, MyUNIverse and HEAT will be unavailable from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The following systems will be unavailable from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday, March 16: e-mail (mail will still be received), MyUNIverseCT (formerly WebCT), MyUNIverse, MEMFIS, and many other smaller distributed systems.

 

KAMYAR ENSHAYAN NEW CEEE DIRECTOR:

Kamyar Enshayan, formerly a research associate at the Center for Energy and Environmental Education, became director of the center March 1. He replaces William Stigliani, who served as CEEE director since the facility's opening in 1996. An engineer by training, Enshayan has served as program manager for the UNI Local Food Project and helped launch the Buy Fresh, Buy Local campaign in northeast Iowa.

 

CANCER-FIGHTING FUNDRAISERS:

The UNI Relay for Life committee is gearing up for its April 11-12 relay with fundraisers throughout March. When you eat at Fazoli's, 441 East Tower Park Drive in Waterloo, on a Monday in March, 10 percent of your total will benefit the UNI Relay for Life when you present a coupon from the UNI Relay for Life Web site. COLLECTING USED LAPTOPS FOR NICARAGUAN STUDENTS:

The student organization Muchas Manos Light Work is collecting good used laptops and digital cameras for teaching purposes in Siares, Nicaragua. If you have a usable laptop with windows software and the battery unit or a digital camera with cords for computer pickup to donate, please drop off at the NISG office in Maucker Union, CBB 261 or in the Management Department office on the second floor of the CBB (Room 231). The units will be taken to Nicaragua with this year's capstone group in early May. Muchas Manos Light Work is a non-profit student organization, so donations are tax deductible. USA WRESTLING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS NEEDS VOLUNTEERS:

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY WITH THE GIRL SCOUTS:

The Girl Scouts are seeking volunteers on Friday, March 28 for "Best of Both Worlds: Hannah Montana." This event allows girls to dress up like Hannah Montana, enjoy karaoke, play games and have fun. TUTOR-MENTORS NEEDED FOR SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM:

The Upward Bound Math and Science Center is looking for students to be tutor-mentors for the seven-week Summer Enrichment Program. Applicants should have a strong math and science background including the ability to tutor students in upper level math and science courses; be able to enforce rules; be able to relate to high school students. Former TRIO participants are given first priority. No other outside activities are possible during time of employment. Salaries vary from $2,500-$3,000. CHILD CARE GRANTS:

$1,000 UNI Child Care Grants are available to both undergraduate and graduate students for the 2008-09 academic year. Criteria: Enrolled at least half time as a UNI student working toward a degree or certification, financial need and minimum $500 per semester out-of-pocket child care expenses. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP:

BOWLING FOR BREASTS:

GUEST ARTIST CELLO RECITAL:

Visiting artist Regina Mushabac, cello, will offer a recital at 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 11, in the GBPAC Davis Hall. Having studied at Juilliard and Indiana University and performed extensively throughout the United States and the world, Mushabac currently serves as professor of cello at Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory of Music. GUEST ARTIST RECITAL: DUO COUNTOUR:

Featuring American percussionist Lee Ferguson and English trumpeter Stephen Altoft, visiting artists duo Countour will offer a recital of new music at 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 25, in the GBPAC Davis Hall. This event is free and open to the public.

 

COMBINED STUDIO VOICE RECITAL:

The UNI School of Music voice division will present a combined studio recital at 6 p.m., Friday, March 28, in the GBPAC Davis Hall. This event is free and open to the public.

In order to celebrate Women's History Month, the Omega Rho chapter of Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society is proud to present two speakers. Judith Griffith, associate professor of English and Chair at Wartburg College, will discuss young adult literature at 7 p.m., Monday, March 10, in Baker 161. Leslie Goetsch, English department chair at an independent girls’ school in Baltimore (Roland Park Country Day), will discuss her book "Back Creek: A Novel" which tells the story of a young girl in Virginia who struggles to keep her family together in the wake of unexpected events. This author reading and discussion will take place at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 11, in Baker 161. Both events are free and open to the public, with refreshments. PAT/HISTORY CLUB LECTURE:

Barbara Cutter, associate professor of history, will present "The Female Indian Killer: The Memorialization of Hannah Dustin and the Feminization of American Violence" at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 26, in SRL 115. The event is free and open to the public.

 

CME LECTURE-DEMONSTRATION AND EXHIBIT:

The CME is celebrating Cesar Chavez's birthday Wednesday, March 26. A lecture and demonstration will be led by artist and UNI graduate Jose Guajardo titled "Interpretations of Murals & Aesthetics in Society," from noon to 1 p.m. At 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, a reception and dedication of a four-panel wall-sized piece by Guajardo, commissioned by the CME, will be held. The panels focus on the historical experience of Latinos, African Americans, Asian Americans and In conjunction with the dedication, an exhibition of Guajardo's works, "Aesthetically Me," dealing mainly with the Chicano experience, will be on display from Wednesday evening through Friday afternoon.

 

GeoTREE CENTER AT UNI:

Ramanathan Sugumaran, Department of Geography and GeoTREE Center Director, will discuss the Center's use of remote sensing data at 7 p.m., March 27, at the University Museum. INTRAMURAL 11-ON-11 OPEN CO-REC SOCCER TOURNAMENT:

Open to students, faculty and staff. Registration will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Wednesday, March 24-26, in the WRC 101. Teams can also register at http://www.uni.edu/wellrec. Limited to the first eight teams. There is an entry fee of $20 with a two-game guarantee. Entry forms are available in the WRC 101.The tournament will begin at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 31.
