GOVERNOR VILSACK TO VISIT CAMPUS: Governor Vilsack will be on campus Wed., Feb. 6, at 10 a.m. for a news conference in the Great Reading Room of Seerley Hall. The news conference is expected to last approximately 20-30 minute and is open to all faculty, staff and students. The Governor will discuss the salaries of Regent university employees and the higher education tax credit.

ERRORS IN EARNINGS STATEMENTS: The January 31, 2002, direct deposit earnings statements have printing errors. The errors caused earnings and deductions to print in the wrong area of the statement or, in some cases, not at all. The net pay amounts that appear in the top right and lower left hand area of the statement are correct. Corrected earnings statements will be mailed to your local home address within the next few days. For immediate access to corrected statements, go to http://myuniverse.uni.edu/. Under "My Personal Records" click on "Direct Deposit 01-2002."

FLOWER AND CANDY DELIVERY FOR VALENTINES: The Programming Board of Lawther Hall is planning a campus-wide "program" for Valentines day. During the week of February 4th-8th they will be selling flowers and candy to be delivered free anywhere on campus. (no delivery off campus.) This includes the nine residence halls and ROTH. Tables will be set up outside a dining center entrance each day for lunch and dinner.

"BERING THE FROZEN STRAIT": WRS is implementing a lap swim incentive program this semester. The theme is "Bering the Frozen Strait". Participants will swim 26 miles over 14 weeks from Russia to Alaska. The program will cost $4.00. Swimmers receive a t-shirt and certificate upon completion. EMERGENCY PHONES NOW OPERATIONAL: Eight blue-light emergency phones are now operational throughout campus. The blue-light phones connect directly to the Public Safety communications center with a one-touch button. When activated, a strobe on top will flash -- marking the location for responding officers. SIDEWALK REPAIR: The contractor for the McCollum Science Hall addition project will be working on underground utilities starting Jan. 30. Pedestrian traffic will be re-routed and directed by signs to be posted by the contractor. Handicapped accessiblity will be routed through Gilchrist. The sidewalk to be affected is located between Missouri St. and Gilchrist (the southwest corner of the construction site). This work should take no more than two weeks. ITS ANNOUNCES NEW WEB SITE: ITS-Educational Technology is announcing the release of a new Web site for "Live Media" This site features live media events occurring at the University of Northern Iowa being delivered to your computer via the Internet/Intranet. Items delivered this way are speeches, homecoming activities, Panther athletic broadcasts, UNI radio stations and campus webcams. The site's URL is http://www.uni.edu/livemedia. The site will also be available off of UNI’s homepage and the MyUniverse Web portal. FAMILY OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS: If you feel your family has made you what you are today or want to show them just how special they are to you, pick up an application in to 205 Commons, the Admissions Office or Student Activities Office in the Union and nominate them for Family of the Year . The selection process will occur in Spring 2002. The family who is awarded will be honored during the Stephen F. Austin game on Sept. 21, during Family Weekend. Applications are due by noon on April 5th.

WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP: The Dr. Sue Follon Scholarship for Women in Leadership recognizes students for their leadership contributions and potential to model leadership for women. Applicants must be undergraduate students who have completed at least one year at UNI and are returning the following fall semester. A cumulative grade point of 3.25 or higher is required. The amount of the award is $1,000. MINORITY BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION: The UNI John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center is pleased to announce a minority business plan competition for business start-ups in the Cedar Valley. This competition is being held in conjunction with KBBG Radio and the UNI Regional Business Center. A minority business start-up must submit a complete business plan and submission form to the UNI JPEC or the UNI RBC by March 4, 2002, to be eligible for the competition. One $5,000 seed grant will be awarded to the winner of the competition. The winner will be announced at the annual KBBG banquet in May of 2002. NCAA SELF-STUDY OPEN FORUM: UNI's NCAA Certification Steering Committee will host an open forum from 2:30 - 4 p.m., Feb. 4, in the Gilchrist Hall Board Room. The purpose is to provide the campus and public an overview of UNI's year-long self-study process, which will culminate with a visit from an NCAA certification team in April. The forum will include comments from sub-committee chairs and the Athletic Director about conclusions and recommendations contained in the committee's NCAA Certification Self-Study Report. A draft of the report is available on the Web at: http://www.uni.edu/ncaa. Following public input, the final report will be presented to the NCAA for review next month.

SAVE FRONTLINE: This student-to-student outreach program is created to give sexual assault victims a safe and comfortable place to report their offense, is holding a spring training session February 8th and 9th. Training is provided by the Family Service League and is available to anyone interested. Sessions run Friday 5-10pm and Saturday 8-1pm.
