CONVOCATION: Start the year off on a high note. Attend Convocationon Aug. 29, 3:30 p.m., UNI-Dome. Enter through the doors on the SE side. Attendees may be subject to random security checks. Convocation speaker is Morris Dees, chief trial counsel and co-founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center. ADDITIONAL PARKING: 150 parking spaces have been created in the new ITC South gravel lot. This is a B lot. In addition, we have also added approximately 150 spaces in the Nebraska overflow lot, south of the South Art lot. This will be designated as R parking.
NEW BAKERY/CONVENIENCE STORE: Biscotti's pastries & more opened on Wednesday, August 15. This all-new bakery/convenience store is located inside the north entrance of Redeker Center. Biscotti's will have the largest selection of fresh baked goods on campus in addition to a complete selection of beverages and snacks. us on Our store hours through August 23rd are 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.
PHONE DIRECTORIES: There are copies remaining of last year's campus phone directory; they are available at the Information Desk in Maucker. This year's directories should be available in late October


LOCKED OUT OF VOICE MAIL?: Anyone unable to access their voice mail box should call the Consulting Center at 3-5555. Remember to provide your 5-digit extension number and specify whether you want it CLEARED (deleting the recorded name, greeting and any messages) or only RESET (leaving the recorded greeting and messages intact). All requests are processed daily and are reset using the initial password "9".
STUDENTS INVITED TO JOIN MUSIC ENSEMBLES: The School of Music invites all students to join ensembles in the School of Music this Fall. Choirs, bands, and the UNI Orchestra have openings for all vocalists and instrumentalists. Students receive graded credit. Join the excitement, make lifelong friends, and perform great music!!! STUDENT TEACHING ROUND-UP: Students planning on student teaching in Fall 2002 should attend Round-up on Monday, August 27th, or Tuesday, August 28th, from 3:30 - 5 p.m. in Room 244/245 Schindler. You must attend one of these meetings. Questions? Call 273-2202.


CHINESE CLASS (710:086) OFFERED IN FALL, 2001: A beginning Chinese conversation class with three hours of undergraduate credit is offered Thursday evenings, 5-8:20 p.m., at Central Intermediate School, Room 218, 1350 Katoski Drive, Waterloo. This course is designed for students with no background in Chinese language.
GLOBAL COURSE: Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment a partnership between scientists, teachers and students in 97 countries is being offered as 820:159g (3 hrs, junior/senior k-12 education majors) Monday nights from 6-9. Successful completion of this course results in GLOBE certification and a tuition stipend of $500.


CASHIER'S HOURS/LOCATIONS AUGUST 24-27: The Cashier's Office will operate out of two locations during the "Move to the Union" portion of "Welcome Week '01"


WELCOME WEEK 2001: Welcome week events begin Sat., Aug. 25 - Fri., Aug. 31. Some events include: a rooftop barbecue, a hypnotist, a drive-in movie and more. For a complete list of events,
"HOOKIN' UP AT UNI:" UNI's Department of Communication Studies will present a gender violence prevention workshop. The workshops are part of a $500,000 U.S. Department of Justice grant awarded to combat violent crimes against women on campus. Five-one hour workshops will be presented to all new students during the orientation weekend prior to the start of the fall semester. All workshops will be held in the Lang Hall Auditorium: 1, 2 and 3:30 p.m. on Sat., Aug. 25 and at 2 p.m. on Sun., Aug. 26. STUDENTS & FACULTY: Take a break and enjoy an ice cream cone at the Marshall Center School. 12-2 p.m., Tues., Aug. 28. The School is located at the corner of 23rd & Hudson Road, close to Schindler Education Center.
