NEWS:

BARTLETT LOT CLOSED TO FACULTY AND STAFF:

The Bartlett A lot will be closed to faculty and staff Wednesday through Friday, Aug. 19, 20 and 21, for Bartlett residents' move-in. The lot will convert to one-hour-parking only beginning at 7 a.m., Aug. 19. It will return to A parking on Monday, Aug. 24. Those displaying special needs permits will be allowed to use the area. Questions may be directed to Parking Operations, 3-5374.

ORDER PARKING PERMITS ONLINE:

You can still sign up for a parking permit online via MyUNIverse through 5 p.m., Friday, Aug. 14. This option is available to current faculty, staff and students. Apply at http://access.uni.edu/forms/index.shtml#P.Click on the link to the right of the "Parking Permit Application" to get to the login screen. Once you are logged in you will able to submit your choices for the parking permit. To have your parking permit fee for the G, A or B permit deducted on a pre-tax basis, it must be purchased by Aug. 14. Hours this week for the Parking Division are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR G LOTTERY:

The deadline for names to be submitted for the Multimodal Transportation Center "G" lottery for 2009-2010 is 4:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 14. Those awarded the "G" permit for the MMTC will be allowed to deduct the fee on a pre-tax basis as long as they have purchased an "A" or "B" permit on a pre-tax basis for the year. The deadline for purchasing the "A" or "B" permits on a pre-tax basis is Aug. 14, whether via the online permit application or in person in Gilchrist Hall.

The "G" permit for the MMTC will be sold at a pro-rated price based on the month the facility opens. The opening date for the MMTC is uncertain but anticipated to be mid-October. Questions can be directed to 3-2710.

LIFELONG UNIVERSITY CLASSES:

Do you or someone you know want to learn more about topics such as Buddhism and the Dalai Lama, the economy or art? Then try UNI's Lifelong University. This program, geared toward the lifelong learner, offers non-credit courses taught by retired and current UNI faculty and staff. Lifelong University Is a way to learn just for fun. Student-related announcements will no longer be posted in UNI Online. Instead, the editors urge you to tell your students to read MyUNIverse News, the weekly e-newsletter designed to provide students with information about internships, scholarships, events and more.

DID YOU KNOW?:

The first issue of UNI Online appeared Aug. 12, 1999. Since then, 1,047 issues have been published. The 1,000th issue was published Jan. 8 of this year.

OUR WORLD IN FOCUS: PHOTO CONTEST:

Amateur and professional photographers of all ages are invited to submit photographs focusing on the flora and fauna of Iowa, the United States and the world. Deadline for contest entries is Tuesday, Dec. 1. Entry details and forms are at www.uni.edu/museum. Prizes will be awarded and entries will be on display at the opening reception on Saturday, Jan. 9, at the University Museum. Entries will be on display through Jan. 30.

HOST FAMILIES/FRIENDS NEEDED:

The International Friendship Program promotes intercultural exchange, understanding and friendship by matching local families and individuals with UNI international students. Hosts and students decide what to do together and how much time to spend together. This is a meaningful and fun experience for all participants. FALL COURSE REQUESTS:

UNI faculty using the Blackboard/WebCT learning management system in conjunction with their fall semester courses, may submit their request using the Web form at http://elearning.uni.edu/forms/course_request.html. Courses will be populated with students Aug. 17, and enrollment changes are processed on a daily basis throughout the semester.

eLEARNING WORKSHOPS FOR FACULTY:

Starting Monday, Aug. 17, ITS-Educational Technology is offering four workshops that will show you how to build a course in eLearning. These workshops are for faculty members who are using the current version of eLearning or for those who have never used eLearning before. UNI eLearning allows faculty to create online courseware as a supplement to an existing face-to-face course, or create a course that is completely online. RESERVE STUDIO IT THIS FALL:

ITS-Educational Technology is taking reservations in the StudioIT labs for this fall. StudioIT 1, 2 and 3 are located in the ITTC Rooms 134, 136 and 138 respectively and can handle classes of up to 60 students. Each lab is equipped with Gateway Tablet PCs, a Crestron multimedia control system and a video conferencing unit. HOURS:

TEMPORARY WELLNESS/RECREATION CENTER AND HEALTH BEAT CLOSING:

The Wellness and Recreation Center is closed through Aug. 16 for annual maintenance, reopening with normal summer hours Aug. 17-20, closed Aug. 21 for WRS student-staff training, and reopening Aug. 22 with normal fall semester hours. The WRC free weight room is closed for renovation until further notice. Health Beat is closed through Aug. 23.

FALL UNIVERSITY OFFICE HOURS:

Beginning Monday, Aug. 17, regular business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) for university offices resume. Supervisors of staff who do not have e-mail access, please inform them of regular business hours.

MAUCKER UNION RENOVATION OPEN HOUSE:

Come see changes that have been made to the lower level of Maucker Union and what services are now being offered for events. Attend an open house from 10 a.m. to noon, Monday, Aug. 17, or from 1 to 3 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 20. Tour the new spaces, see demonstrations of interactive Web video conferencing and the new Virtual EMS reservation system, sample food items and register for door prizes. SCHOOL OF MUSIC HOSTS PUBLIC READING OF NEW MUSICAL:

A workshop of the musical "A Scotch Verdict" by Rebecca Burkhardt and Cynthia Goatley will culminate in a public reading at 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 16, in Bengtson Auditorium. Elizabeth Margolius, director of the presentation at Theatre Building Chicago last November, leads the workshop. There will be a talk-back session with the director, writer and composer after the reading. Free and open to the public.

SUZUKI SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE:

UNI Suzuki School Open House will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 29, in Russell Hall. Meet the teachers, observe a lesson and group activity and try out instruments. The program offers instruction on violin, viola, cello, harp, flute and guitar. Students of all ages and levels are welcome.
