NEWS:

VOLUNTEERING FOR TORNADO/FLOOD RELIEF:

If you want to be contacted to help with disaster recovery relief efforts, visit the Current Announcements section of MyUNIverse and complete the volunteer form which will be available later today. Even if you have already contacted UMPR to offer assistance, please fill out the Disaster Volunteer Registration form.

 
HUMAN SERVICE AGENCIES UNITE TO HELP FLOOD VICTIMS:

The Black Hawk County Disaster Recovery group plans to help victims once they have utilized the services of the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, FEMA and private insurance. http://www.cedarvalleyunitedway.org/flood.htm

 

MAIL CENTER OPERATIONS UPDATE:

The University's of Iowa's Central Mail service is running "business as usual." All of UNI's outgoing U.S. mail will be transported to Iowa City for same-day metering and processing. However, U.S. Postal Service operations in Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids and Des Moines are still affected by the flooding and road closures so mail delivery and pick-up may be delayed.With that in mind, please remind faculty and staff to augment time-sensitive U.S. mail communication with e-mail, etc., if possible.

 

REGENTS MATH AND SCIENCE INITIATIVE:

The $4 million Board of Regents Mathematics and Science Education Collaborative Inititiative has been officially re-named the Iowa Mathematics & Science Education Partnership (IMSEP). The change is effective immediately.

 

TAX LAW CHANGES FOR THOSE USING 12 PAY OPTION:

UNI faculty and P&S academic year employees electing the 12-pay option will not be affected by the recent Section 409A tax law change. For more information read the announcement on the Business Operations Payroll website. http://www.vpaf.uni.edu/obo/payroll/index.shtml

 

PUBLIC AUCTION OF VEHICLES:

UNI is offering four vehicles for sale on Public Surplus (www.publicsurplus.com). There are three 2001 Ford Taurus sedans and a 2005 Ford Crown Vic police interceptor. CP LOT RESTRICTIONS:

The Rider CP lot is reserved for orientation parking through July 11. To further facilitate parking for orientation participants, "A" and "B" permit holders are requesed to not park in the Shull and Redeker CP lots.

 

MICROSOFT SETTLEMENT REFUNDS:

All UNI Microsoft settlement refunds must be deposited in a university account. A claim has been filed for the university, but some individuals/departments have also filed a claim. The refund check may be payable to an individual, but the refund is UNI property. If you receive a Microsoft Settlement Refund check, please deposit into:

HELP WELCOME PARENTS OF TRANSFER STUDENTS:

In addition to welcoming parents of incoming freshmen, UNI will host a Parent Hospitality Tent during the summer orientation sessions for transfer students. Faculty and staff assistance is needed to help staff the booth in the coffeehouse in Maucker Union. Volunteers will visit with parents and answer questions from 12:45 to 3:30 p.m., Wednesdays, June 18 and 25 and July 2. If you'd like to volunteer, e-mail liz.conklin@uni.edu.

 

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR IOWA STATE FAIR:

Faculty and staff volunteers are needed to help at the UNI exhibit at the Iowa State Fair, Aug. 7-17. Shifts are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 3 to 9 p.m. Two faculty and staff are scheduled per shift to work alongside alumni volunteers. Volunteers will receive free admission and a complimentary UNI shirt. The university PC discount Dell site for individual personal purchasers (not departmental purchases) has been updated to include several of the Dell XPS and Inspiron models of laptops. The significant thing to notice is that the warranty is three year In-Home Parts & Labor, 24x7 phone support versus the usual one year mail-in warranty.

These are in addition to the special bid offerings completed in May on the site.

Interested in becoming a Fulbright Scholar? The traditional Fulbright Scholar Program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals to some 130 countries each year. Grantees lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields. The application deadline for the 2009-10 program is Aug. 1. RETIREMENT RECEPTION FOR MIKE MIXSELL:

A farewell reception in honor of Mike Mixsell, will take place from 2 to 4 p.m., Friday, June 20, in the Commons Lounge and Porch. Program will begin at 2:30 p.m. Mike has been with UNI since 1979.

 

 

PERFORMING ARTS:

LIVE FROM STUDIO ONE:

Jonathan Byrd, will perform at 7 p.m., Monday, June 23, in KUNI's studio on the third-floor of the CAC. His musical influences include Appalachian, country, early American balladry, modern atmospheric Mideastern, urban and old timey folk music.Admission is $3 at the door, free for children under 12.

 

FREE JAZZ PERFORMANCE:

The eighth Annual Jazz Combo Camp performance by the UNI Jazz Combo campers will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 19, in the back parking lot at University Book & Supply. The Jazz Combo camp began as a recruiting tool for Chris Merz, director of Jazz Studies at UNI. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy this free evening of jazz. For more information call 266-7581.

WELLNESS/RECREATION:

ALLEN EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (EAP):

In the course of daily living, we all experience problems and difficulties. The EAP is available to UNI employees who qualify for insurance benefits, as well as any immediate, dependent family members.
