Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007NEWS:PRESIDENT ALLEN SEEKS INPUT ON RECOMMENDATION TO ARM UNIVERSITY POLICE:President Allen is seeking comments on the issue of arming university public safety officers. The vice presidents of business and finance and the public safety directors at the three state universities have submitted recommendations to the university presidents that sworn and certified university police officers be authorized to carry firearms as standard equipment. Arming would be subject to stringent training and firearms recertification requirements. The report is posted at http://www.vpaf.uni.edu/vpaf/documents/arming_report_73107.pdf. Please refer to pages 7-9 of the report. The presidents have been asked to study this report and provide recommendations to the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, by Oct. 1. President Allen has asked the leadership of the UNI Faculty Senate, United Faculty, Professional & Scientific Council, AFSCME, Supervisory Confidential Merit Personnel and Northern Iowa Student Government to review the recommendation with their respective members and provide input by Sept. 15. The university community is invited to respond, as well. Over the next several weeks President Allen will review all campus input. UNIVERSITY AVENUE CONSTRUCTION UPDATE:Stage 2 in the reconstruction of University Avenue will begin Friday, Aug. 10. Traffic will switch from the existing westbound lanes of University Avenue to the newly reconstructed eastbound lanes. Once traffic is switched, a full road closure of the westbound lanes of University Avenue from 300 feet east of Hudson Road to 300 feet east of Campus Street will begin. Access to Ohio Street north of University Avenue will be closed during this stage. Access to Campus Street north of University Avenue will be maintained with half of the intersection open to through traffic at all times. The University Avenue westbound lane closure will be in effect for 10 to 12 weeks, depending on the weather.
INTERIM ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR GRAD COLLEGE APPOINTED:Victoria Pruin DeFrancisco has been appointed interim associate dean of graduate academic affairs. DeFrancisco will begin working in the Graduate College Aug. 15, and will be responsible for faculty and student awards, graduate curriculum review, and student requests and grievances, and will continue to teach in the Department of Communication Studies, where she holds the faculty appointment of tenured professor.
FALL FACULTY MEETING:The annual University Fall Faculty meeting will be held at 3:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 20 (first day of classes), in the Lang Hall Auditorium. President Allen will deliver his annual address to the faculty; new faculty will be welcomed; and faculty, staff and student leadership will be introduced. Recipients of the Class of 1943 Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Ross Nielsen Award for Excellence in Service, the Donald McKay Award for Excellence in Research, and the Faculty Regents Award winners will be recognized. Refreshments will be served in the Lang Hall Auditorium lobby following the meeting.
DAKOTA STREET CLOSING:Dakota Street, in front of the GBPAC, is closed to accomodate work related to the Electrical Distribution Loop System/Load Break Switches - Phase I project. All entrances to the GBPAC, including the visitor parking lot on the north side of the building, will remain open during this street closure.
INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH INTERIM DIRECTOR APPOINTED:Shashi Kaparthi, associate professor of management, has been named interim director of Institutional Research, effective Aug. 1. He will report directly to President Allen. Kaparthi replaces Thulasi Kumar, who has taken a position as director of institutional research and assessment at the University of Missouri-Rolla.

PARKING PERMIT UPDATES:Online applications for parking permits will be accepted via MyUNIverse through Wednesday, Aug. 15. Visit https://access.uni.edu/forms/index.shtml#P. Click on the "online" link to the right of the "Parking Permit Application." The "G" parking area will remain the furthest north row of parking in the Gilchrist A Lot. Advise visitors not to park in this area. It will remain a tow zone year round from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Permits can be purchased in person at 106 Towers Center beginning Aug. 1. The Parking Division will be open 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Aug. 3. Beginning Aug. 6, hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. To have the parking permit fee deducted on a pre-tax basis, the permit must be purchased by Aug. 15. This applies to the purchase of the G, A or B permits. Questions can be directed to 3-2710.
