Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007NEWS:WEBCT SYSTEM MAINTENANCE:The WebCT System will be offline, from 12:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 3, until 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 4, to upgrade the Oracle database. During this period, students, teaching assistants, section designers and instructors will not be able to access WebCT CE6 for UNI academic courses, administrative departmental sites, continuing education and guided independent study courses, or Allen College courses. Service will be restored when the database upgrade is complete.
SYSTEM OUTAGES:The following systems will be down for maintenance during these times. E-mail and MyUNIverse: 6 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 2, and 4 p.m. to midnight, Sunday, Aug. 5. E-mail only: 9 p.m., Monday, Aug. 6 to 4 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 7. MEMFIS: midnight to 6:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 4.
INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH INTERIM DIRECTOR APPOINTED:Shashi Kaparthi, associate professor of management, has been named interim director of Institutional Research, effective Aug. 1. He will report directly to President Ben Allen. Kaparthi, who has extensive experience with the design of decision support and information visualization systems, replaces Thulasi Kumar, who has taken a position as director of institutional research and assessment at the University of Missouri-Rolla.
COE SEEKING NEW ASSOCIATE DEAN: UNI's College of Education is seeking an associate dean. The associate dean reports to the dean and serves as an academic administrator and a member of the management team for the college. More details may be found at
DAKOTA STREET CLOSING:Beginning Monday, Aug. 6, Dakota Street, in front of the GBPAC, will close for six days to accomodate work related to the Electrical Distribution Loop System/Load Break Switches - Phase I project. All entrances to the GBPAC, including the visitor parking lot on the north side of the building, will remain open during this street closure.
PARKING CHANGES FOR 2007-2008:Most changes in the Parking Rules and Regulations for 2007-2008 involve the increase of several parking fines. Please refer to your copy of the 2007-2008 rules and regulations to see these changes. One of the other more pertinent changes is that university departments/individuals who are authorized to have service permits will now be charged the regular yearly rate paid by outside vendors of $118.
PARKING PERMIT UPDATES:Online applications for parking permits will be accepted via MyUNIverse through Wednesday, Aug. 15. Visit https://access.uni.edu/forms/index.shtml#P. Click on the "online" link to the right of the "Parking Permit Application." The "G" parking area will remain the furthest north row of parking in the Gilchrist A Lot. Advise visitors not to park in this area. It will remain a tow zone year round from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Permits can be purchased in person at 106 Towers Center beginning Aug. 1. The Parking Division will be open 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Aug. 3. Beginning Aug. 6, hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. To have the parking permit fee deducted on a pre-tax basis, the permit must be purchased by Aug. 15. This applies to the purchase of the G, A or B permits. Questions can be directed to 3-2710.
IOWA MATH AND SCIENCE EDUCATION SUMMIT REPORTS:President Allen and Judy Jeffrey, director, Iowa Department of Education, hosted 130 guests at an Iowa Mathematics and Science Education Summit, July 11, on the UNI campus. The summit focused on the Board of Regents Mathematics and Science Education Initiative that addresses student performance, the need for more highquality teachers and state collaboration.
