NEWS

FALL FACULTY MEETING:

The annual University Fall Faculty meeting will take place Monday, Aug. 28, at 3:30 p.m. in the Lang Hall Auditorium. President Ben Allen will deliver his first annual address to the faculty; new faculty will be welcomed; and faculty, staff, and student leadership will be introduced. Recipients of the Class of 1943 Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Ross Nielsen Award for Excellence in Service, the Donald McKay Award for Excellence in Research and the Regents Award winners will be recognized. Refreshments will be served following the meeting.

PARKING LOT TO CLOSE:

Construction of the Human Performance Complex will begin the week of Aug. 21. This will reduce the size of the parking lot adjacent to the WRC/PEC. There will be no access to the UNI-Dome from the parking lot.

UNI LAUNCHES E-NEWSLETTER FOR PARENTS:

The first edition of the Panther Parent, UNI's new e-newsletter for parents and guardians, was launched last week. It will be distributed three times per semester. Content is very brief and focused on relevant key dates and time-sensitive issues. If you have items for consideration, please send them to liz.conklin@uni.edu. FEDERAL DISCLOSURE INFORMATION:

Links to federal disclosure information, as well as institutional and financial assistance information, are available to all prospective and currently enrolled students as required by the Higher Education Amendments of 1998, Public Law 105-244 and in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act at http://www.uni.edu/regist/schedule_fall2006/misc_info.shtml#10. Students have a right to inspect and have copies of any and/or all of the information.

ORDER ACADEMIC APPAREL FOR INSTALLATION:

The Installation Ceremony for President Allen will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 29, in the GBPAC. All faculty and staff are invited. Academic apparel will be provided free of charge. Reserve through the Registrar's Office by calling 3-2283 or contacting norma.riley@uni.edu. Faculty and staff members who have earned master's degrees or higher are eligible to wear a hood with their robes and march in the procession. Deadline for apparel reservations is Aug. 25. Delivery should occur on approximately Sept. 25. The Registrar’s Office will contact you when your order has been received. All apparel must be returned immediately after the ceremony.

UPDATING THE 2006-2007 CAMPUS PHONE BOOK:

GILCHRIST HALL UPDATE:

ACADEMIC SERVICES HAS MOVED:

The Department of Academic Services which includes Examination Services, the Reading and Learning Center, plus Athletics Academic Advising are located in room 007 of the Innovative Teaching and Technology Center, formerly known as the East Gym.

WRITING CENTER HAS MOVED:

The Writing Center is now located in the Innovative Teaching and Technology Center (ITTC) Room 008. Free writing assistance is available to students, faculty and staff. Call 3-2361 to schedule an appointment.

ITS - ADMIN HAS MOVED:

Information Technology Services - Administration office moved to the Innovative Teaching & Technology Center (ITTC)Room 120. This move includes Karen Paulsen, Jane Fritts, Laurie Knipp and Sandee Murphy. All phone numbers will remain the same. The new mail code is 0301.

EMPLOYEE RESOURCES

TRANSFER PLAN-IT DEMONSTRATION:

Come see what the buzz is about. Transfer Plan-It is an online service designed to assist transfer students in determining which university requirements they may have satisfied based on the transfer work they have completed prior to attending UNI. It is important for all faculty and staff to see. Demonstrations are scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 6, in 109 CBB, at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

BRINGING CLASS ROSTERS INTO EXCEL:

Faculty receiving class rosters electronically as ".csv" or ".txt" files can easily import them into Excel as a formatted Excel spreadsheet by using the instructions at the following Web site: http://fp.uni.edu/its/et/tlt/TOOLS/excel_gradebook.HTM

HOW TO START A SMALL BUSINESS WORKSHOP:

NEH INTERNAL APPLICATION NOTICE:

Internal applications are being accepted by the Office of Sponsored Programs from faculty and staff for 2007 summer stipends from the National Endowment for the Humanities, due by 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 18.

OUTDOOR EQUIPMENT RENTAL:

Located in the Wellness Recreation Center (WRC) Room 174, UNI Outdoors rents outdoor recreation equipment to meet all outdoor needs. Canoes, tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, etc. are just a few of the items available to the students, faculty, staff and the community. PRINT EXHIBIT SET TO OPEN AT ART GALLERY:

The print exhibition, "Quiet Village: Recent Works by Michael Krueger and Jenny Schmid," runs through Sunday, Sept. 17. The artists will give a lecture titled "Welcome to the Quiet Village" at 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 28, in KAB, Room 111. A reception will follow. To complement the Gallery exhibition, recent prints by printmaker Mark Hosford will be in the KAB Lobby showcases. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.

PANTHER ATHLETICS:

The UNI women's soccer team will begin its home season with an exhibition match against Wartburg on Wednesday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. at the Cedar Valley Youth Soccer Complex. The UNI women's soccer team will play its regular season opener against South Dakota State on Fri., Aug. 25, at 6 p.m. at the Cedar Valley Youth Soccer Complex.

Join UNI Panther fans in Des Moines, Thursday, Aug. 31, for a 5 p.m. tailgate party at the Drake Stadium. KUNI HOSTS FREE CONCERT:

As part of UNI's Welcome Week, KUNI presents a free outdoor concert Wednesday, Aug. 23, from 5 to 8 p.m. Adam Bolts of Cedar Falls' own The Beat Strings, Iowa City's Death Ships and Marion's The Wheelers are featured. KUNI'S LIVE FROM STUDIO ONE:

Singer-songwriter Raldo Schneider will perform at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, in KUNI's third-floor studios. Admission is $3 at the door, free for children under 12.

THEATRE AUDITIONS:

Auditions for "Nickel and Dimed," written by Joan Holden (adapted from Barbara Ehrenreich's book) and directed by Karen Mitchell, will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 29 and 30 in the Interpreters Theatre, Lang 040. GRADUATE STUDENT ORIENTATION:

All graduate students are invited to attend a Graduate Student Orientation on Thursday, Aug. 24, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in Maucker Union Old Central Ballroom C. The orientation will feature a graduate student panel, an overview of student services and informational tables. A reception will follow with entertainment by a UNI Jazz Combo.
