NEWS

WARNING SIREN:

The Black Hawk County Emergency Management Agency will conduct a test of the outdoor early warning siren system Wednesday, July 6, at 11 a.m. One sound is used for the test -- a steady wail lasting for three minutes. If severe weather conditions are present, the test will be canceled to avoid confusion.

 

MEMFIS AND OTHER SERVICES -- EXTENDED OUTAGE JULY 16:

All servers maintained by the ITS-IS DAA Team, including MEMFIS and the servers that provide authentication for MyUNIverse and CICS student applications will be unavailable from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, July 16. ITS will apply vendor-mandated software upgrades to the Storage Area Network during that time.

 

CAMPUS CONVERSATION TASK FORCES TO BE FORMED:

The Campus Conversation preliminary recommendations have been reviewed and approved by all campus governance groups. The recommendations include organizing five task forces. If you are interested in being considered to serve on any of the task forces, submit your name to Brenda.Buzynski@uni.edu by 10 a.m., July 11. Refer to http://www.uni.edu/conversation/ to review the campus-approved recommendations, and a list of the five task forces and their responsibilities. Individuals selected to serve will be notified in August.

DEPARTMENT NAME CHANGES:

Academic Advising & Career Services is the new name for the combination of the former departments of Academic Advising and the Career Center. Phone number, location, mail code and fax will all remain the same.

 

Conference & Event Services changed its name to University Events Coordination effective July 1. The phone number, location, mail code and fax will all remain the same. Jan Hanish, assistant vice president for event management, will split time between the University Events Coordination house and her office in 109 Gilchrist.

 

GUESTS ON CAMPUS THIS WEEK:

PERSONNEL CHANGES

ACADEMIC ADVISING & CAREER SERVICES:

Bob Frederick has been named director of Academic Advising & Career Services. Jean Neibauer has been named associate director. Bob and Jean will lead the department in providing educational service to students. They also will work to create an integrated mission that will increase opportunities for students and staff.

 

Susan Schwieger is the new Associate Director for Career Services. She formerly was the Associate Director, Liberal Arts and Sciences Career Services.

 

Donna Vinton is the new Associate Director for Career Development. She formerly was the Associate Director for Career Development Services.

 

BUSINESS OPERATIONS:

Effective immediately Kelly Hoeppner (ext. 3-3544) is the contact for request for payment questions, and Kim Andersen (ext. 3-6425) should be contacted for staff time-card related payroll questions.

 

MARKETING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS:

Rebecca Schultze has joined the Office of University Marketing & Public Relations as a Public Relations Specialist. She formerly was the communications director for the Iowa City Chamber of Commerce.

 

PUBLIC SAFETY:

Walt Stephenson, former general manager of MET Transit, has been named grant manager for UNI's Multimodal Facility project, a collaboration between UNI, the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MET), and the cities of Cedar Falls and Waterloo. This is a two-year, temporary appointment, starting July 18. Stephenson will oversee planning, reviewing and reporting regarding the grant, through construction and completion of the facility. He also will work with UNI, MET Transit, the cities of Cedar Falls and Waterloo, and the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, to develop operational plans for the new facility and its associated transit system. He will report to Dave Zarifis, director of Public Safety. Following completion of the project a new position will be established at UNI to manage parking and transit operations.

 

OFFICE OF UNIVERSITY DEVELOPMENT:

Vicki Collum is the new Director of Annual Giving. She will direct planning and operations to secure resources for the Annual Fund, the Deans' Funds for Excellence, and other university priorities. Vicki previously served as the Development communications administrator. A  search to fill that position is underway.

 

Michelle Rourke is the new Director of Development for the College of Humanities & Fine Arts. She will direct major-gift fundraising efforts in support of the college's programs and departments. Michelle previously was KUNI's director of development.

 

Diane Curtis is the new Director of Planned Giving. She manages the planned-giving program and directs fundraising efforts involving charitable trusts, gift annuities, and other deferred-giving vehicles. Diane previously served as senior development officer for CHFA.

 

Jim Jermier is the new Assistant Director of Planned Giving. He previously served as program assistant to the UNI Foundation's planned-giving office.

HEALTH BEAT:

Health Beat will return to its regular summer hours in July.

Monday – Thursday 6:30-8:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 2:45-4:45 p.m.

Friday 6:30-8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

STUDENT EMPLOYMENT TRAINING:

To learn more about student employment at UNI, register for Student Employment Training. Sessions are two hours in length and offered at three different times in early August. Training will cover student employment policies and procedures, the impact of Oracle, and more. To register, visit the MEMFIS section of MyUNIverse and click the "Register for Training" link. TWO JULY SALES:

On Thursday July 7, UNI will host a tag sale from 9 to 11 a.m. at the CET. This sale will include six cameras, a copystand, an HP color printer and other photo lenses and accessories. All items will be specifically priced for sale. Photos and more info are available at http://www.vpaf.uni.edu/obo/fixedassets/pubsale.shtml. All items are sold "as is" and must be removed on the day of sale. All items must be paid for in cash, or check, on site before removal. Call Amy or Chrystal with questions about the photographic equipment at 3-7820.

A large Diebold safe is for sale by sealed bid. Bids must be received at UNI-Office of Business Operations, 256 Gilchrist Hall 5 p.m. on July 7. Call Vince at 3-3527 with questions on either sale.

 

RETIREMENT RECEPTION:

Physical Plant will host a retirement reception for Sharon Hemmen on Thursday, July 14, from 1 to 3 p.m. in Gilchrist 207-209. Sharon has been at UNI since 1978, working in various departments -- Data Processing (now ITS), Controller's Office and Physical Plant. Please join us as we celebrate with Sharon.

 

A 'CAMPUS OF DIFFERENCE' SESSIONS:

This program, sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League's A World of Difference Institute, explores issues of identity, culture and awareness and emphasizes skills needed to confront and combat bias. Led by UNI faculty and administrators, a summer session will take place Friday, July 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the CME.
