MEMFIS
TRAINING:
MEMFIS Training sessions have been scheduled through April. All sessions

IRS SMALL BUSINESS TAX WORKSHOP: The
UNI Regional Business Center will host an IRS Small Business Tax Workshop
Saturday, Jan. 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the UNI Regional Business
Center, 212 E. 4th St., Waterloo. Instructors will discuss deductible
business expenses, payroll taxes, deposit requirements, record keeping,
filing tax returns, and more. The cost for this class is $35 per participant

FAST TRAC ENTREPRENEURIAL TRAINING:
The UNI Regional Business Center will host Fast Trac, a national training
program for new and existing entrepreneurs. Each session will include
classroom instruction, a presentation by an expert from the local
business community, and an opportunity to network with other Cedar
Valley entrepreneurs. Classes will be held on Saturday mornings, from
8:30 a.m. to noon Jan. 25 - March 15, at the UNI Regional Business
Center, 212 E. 4th St., Waterloo. The fee is $199 per business. Visit

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: The
Management & Professional Development Center will present "Creating
a Motivating Work Environment" on Jan. 28 and repeated Feb. 18;
and "Guiding Employees Through Change" on Feb. 13 and repeated
March 6. These workshops are part of the MPDC's Management Training
Consortium, UNI employees are offered a discounted fee of $140. Workshops
are held in 1-3 CBB from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Workshop fee includes student
materials, lunch, and light morning and afternoon refreshments. To

LEGISLATIVE
FORUM:
The Cedar Falls and Waterloo Chambers of Commerce and the Cedar Valley
Manufacturers Association are sponsoring a legislative forum Jan.
7 at the Starlite Village Hotel in Waterloo. A reception will be held
at 6:30 p.m., with the forum beginning at 7 p.m. Legislators will
deliver brief overviews of issues and priorities, followed by a question
and answer session. Public support for public education needs to be
a priority. UNI needs a strong voice at this forum. For more information,

RETURN OF RENTAL APPAREL FOR COMMENCEMENT:
Faculty members who failed to return commencement apparel should please
do so AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. For questions, contact Norma in the Registrar's

EAST GYM TO BE RENOVATED: The
East Gym and East Gym pool will be renovated to house the Innovative
Teaching and Technology Center. This facility will give students,
faculty and staff easy access to high tech classrooms. This project
is funded through state appropriations and is expected to begin fall
of 2003. The gym and gym pool will be closed beginning fall 2003.
Use of the WRC lap pool and leisure pool, and the Price Lab School
pool will be coordinated by appropriate university staff. If you have
any questions regarding this renovation project, contact Morris Mikkelsen,

P & S COUNCIL NEWS: The
Professional & Scientific Staff Council elected officers for 2003
at its Dec. 12th meeting. The new P&S Council president is Bob
Frederick, associate director of Education Services, Career Center.
The new vice president is Patti Rust, associate registrar of Student
Services and Systems, Registrar's Office. They began their terms of
office Jan. 1. For more information about the P&S Council and

COACH OF THE YEAR: Bobbi Petersen,
UNI's head volleyball coach, has been named the American Volleyball
Coaches Association/Tachikara National Coachof the Year. For the second
straight year, Petersen led her Panther squad to the NCAA Tournament's
Sweet 16, this year earning the fourth seed, the highest in school
history. The Panthers finished the season ranked sixth in the nation,
the school's all-time high, and had wins over No. 3 Florida, No. 7
UCLA, No. 8 Pepperdine, No. 20 Minnesota and No. 20 Missouri. UNI
finished the year with a 34-3 record. Earlier this season, the UNI
volleyball team earned its fifth consecutive Missouri Valley Conference
title with a mark of 17-1.

BEST OF 2002: UNI's Funk Fest
2002 was recognized by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier as one of
the top events in the Cedar Valley this year. The UNI Department of
Leisure, Youth & Human Services' (LYHS) Festivals and Special
Events class hosted the event. The 9/11 Remembrance event also made
the Courier's Best of 2002 list (Pulse 12/26).
