PURCHASING OFFICE TO BID FOR MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM: The
Purchasing Office has put out an Invitation to Bid for a Maintenance
Management Program for office equipment repair/preventative maintenance.
The bid specs are posted on Purchasing's web page under "What's New".
This is to inform current users under the Teleserve Maintenance Program
that an effort is underway to refine the current program through more
binding terms and conditions and to inform potential customers of the
program, offering an alternative method for office equipment maintenance
Protection. Questions may be directed to Chuck Neil @ 3-2980 or via e-mail.

NEW ROD LIBRARY DATABASES: Rod Library recently subscribed to the
following FirstSearch databases, all available through the Indexes,
Abstracts & Databases page at

UNISTAR UPGRADE: Rod Library recently upgraded UNISTAR, the online
catalog, at
http://unistar.uni.edu/search~S1/
The keyword index is more powerful now with the addition of search
features such as adjacency, proximity, truncation, and field specification.
These are explained at the bottom of the keyword search form. Search
results can now be marked, combined, and e-mailed or saved in formats
such as Pro-Cite and End Note.

CONVOCATION VIDEOTAPES--Monday's University Convocation in the UNI-Dome
was videotaped by ITS-EdTech. There will not be a transcript of
Dr. Ben Carson's address available. The Committee did receive permission
to use the videotape for educational classroom use; for training purposes
within the University, such as residence hall programming or staff training;
for closed circuit educational use within the institution; and for UNI
faculty who are teaching classes originating from Cedar Falls to specific
classroom sites, via the Iowa Communications Network. Copies are available
via departmental requisition at $5 per copy, or at $7.50 for those who
wish to pay personally. To order a copy of the videotape contact

STUDY ABROAD INFORMATION SESSIONS: We will discuss the benefits of
studying abroad, how to get started, UNI and non-UNI programs, and how

THANKS AND REQUEST FOR FEEDBACK--The University Convocation
Committee wishes to thank all members of the University community
for your many acts of assistance and support for the Aug. 28 Convocation
in the UNI-Dome. More than 250 faculty members participated in academic
regalia, along with the platform party. The crowd was estimated at about
2,500. The Committee will be meeting for an evaluation session in
early September and requests your feedback and suggestions as a part
of that process. Send comments to Convocation@uni.edu no later than
Friday, Sept. 8.

SPORT CLUB ADVISOR NEEDED: UNI Sport Clubs, recognized and sponsored
by WRS, are required to have a faculty/staff advisor for their respective
club. Club advisors should have a basic knowledge of the sport or activity.
Advisor responsibilities include facilitate and provide advice for club
decision making, insure university policies are understood and followed,
model good leadership, and oversee financial transactions. If you would
be interested in being involved with students in this capacity please
contact Tim Klatt, Sport Club Director, at 3-7120 or

PADDLING PANTHERS: Family members of UNI students, faculty and staff
are eligible for Paddling Panthers Swim Lessons. The cost is $30 per
individual. Lessons are held at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. in the WRC leisure
and lap pools every fall Saturday (except 9/30 and 11/25). Classes
start Sept. 9. The levels of classes offered will be determined by demand,
however there will be a preschool class (3-5 year olds). To register,

BEGINNING CONVERSATIONAL VIETNAMESE: Anyone who is interested in
beginning conversational Vietnamese, please contact
cheryl.roberts@uni.edu.
A trained language teacher and native speaker of Vietnamese will meet
two or three times per week (no more than an hour each time). This
is noncredit and nongraded.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE FROM UNI: By now, scholarships should have been
processed. Scholarships automatically credit to students' university
bills when the student is enrolled full time. Scholarship
administrators can approve an exception to full-time enrollment if they
determine this exception is appropriate. To process an exception a
department needs to directly contact Evie Waack, scholarship specialist
in the UNI Financial Aid Office.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Be part of history as the Northern Iowa Women's Soccer
team hosts their first intercollegiate regular season game TONIGHT!
The Panthers face Morningside College at 5 p.m. on the field directly
behind the UNI-Dome. Women's Soccer continues their home schedule with
games tomorrow (vs. Creighton, 4 p.m.) and Sunday (vs. Eastern
Illinois, 3 p.m.).

PANTHER FOOTBALL: #10-ranked UNI Football opens the 2000 season TONIGHT
in the UNI-Dome vs. Morningside College. Kick-off is at 7:05 p.m.
Don't forget to come early to witness the first varsity soccer game
in school history!

MILLENNIUM LECTURE SERIES: "Rebuilding Civic Society in the New Millennium".
Wednesday, Sept. 6, 7 p.m. in Maucker Union Expansion. Prisons are bulging,
gated communities commonplace and courts are choked with lawsuits. Professor
Tom Rice, Head of the UNI Political Science Department, examines what it
means to be civic and what it will take for individuals and communities to
renew civic society in the United States. The lecture will be followed by a
reception.

ARCHEOLOGICAL SOCIETY MEETING: The September Meeting of the Black Hawk
Regional Archeological Society will be held in the basement meeting room
of the Cedar Falls Public Library at 7 p.m. on September 6. The speaker
will be Lynn Alex, she will speak on "Recent Archeological Finds in Iowa."
