will be closed at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31 due to the UNI

PURCHASING OFFICE TO BID FOR MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM: The
Purchasing Office has put out an Invitation to Bid for a Maintenance
Management Program for office equipment repair/preventative maintenance.
The bid specs are posted on Purchasing's web page under "What's New".
This is to inform current users under the Teleserve Maintenance Program
that an effort is underway to refine the current program through more
binding terms and conditions and to inform potential customers of the
program, offering an alternative method for office equipment maintenance
Protection. Questions may be directed to Chuck Neil @ 3-2980 or via e-mail.

NEW ROD LIBRARY DATABASES: Rod Library recently subscribed to the
following FirstSearch databases, all available through the Indexes,
Abstracts & Databases page at
http://www.library.uni.edu/dbandcat/db.html
The database includes articles from nearly 12,500 journals; core life-
science journals; dissertations accepted at accredited U.S. institutions;
journals, books, and working papers on economics; worldwide literature on
geography, geology, and ecology; abstracts of music literature in all formats; papers and proceedings presented at conferences worldwide; and a
catalog of books and other materials in libraries worldwide.

LIBRARY TTY REFERENCE SERVICE: UNI Library now offers individuals
the option of obtaining informational and reference assistance through
TTY/TDD technology (telecommunications devices for people with hearing
or other disabilities). Individuals wishing to contact Rod Library by
TTY may call 3-7299.

UNISTAR UPGRADE: Rod Library recently upgraded UNISTAR, the online
catalog, at
http://unistar.uni.edu/search~S1/.
The keyword index is more powerful now with the addition of search
features such as adjacency, proximity, truncation, and field specification.
These are explained at the bottom of the keyword search form. Search
results can now be marked, combined, and e-mailed or saved in formats
such as Pro-Cite and End Note.

UPDATE THE CAMPUS TELEPHONE DIRECTORY FOR 2000-01: The following
sections of the 1999-2000 campus telephone directory need to be
reviewed for accuracy:
1) Office Directory, pages 5 through 11
2) FAX numbers, pages 13 and 14
3) WWW home pages, pages 14 and 15
If there are changes in your office listing in any of these sections,
photocopy the pages affected (an enlarged copy is very helpful),
mark the changes clearly on the photocopy. Fax the marked photocopy
to: Phone Directory, Office of Public Relations, 3-2888.
DEADLINE: Sunday, Sept. 10. No changes will be accepted after that date.

----
PADDLING PANTHERS: Family members of UNI students, faculty and staff
are eligible for Paddling Panthers Swim Lessons. The cost is $30 per
individual. Lessons are held at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. in the WRC leisure
and lap pools every fall Saturday (except 9/30 and 11/25). Classes
start Sept. 9. The levels of classes offered will be determined by demand,
however there will be a preschool class (3-5 year olds). To register,

BEGINNING CONVERSATIONAL VIETNAMESE:
Anyone who is interested in beginning conversational Vietnamese,
please contact cheryl.roberts@uni.edu. A trained language teacher
and native speaker of Vietnamese will meet two or three times per week
(no more than an hour each time). This is noncredit and nongraded.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE FROM UNI: By now, scholarships should have been
processed. Scholarships automatically credit to students' university
bills when the student is enrolled full time. Scholarship
administrators can approve an exception to full-time enrollment if they
determine this exception is appropriate. To process an exception a
department needs to directly contact Evie Waack, scholarship specialist
in the UNI Financial Aid Office.

BUY-SELL-TRADE BOARD IN WRC: Wellness and Recreation Services is
initiating a Buy-Sell-trade Board for used fitness and recreation
equipment. UNI students, faculty and staff can complete a card with
details about their equipment in WRC 101. Items are posted on a display
board in the WRC main hallway and on the WRS website under

STREET CLOSING: South Main Street from University Ave. to Jennings
Drive will be closed for approximately 6 weeks beginning Aug. 29.
There will be access to Nazareth church and to the Country Inn.
There will be NO ACCESS to ROTH or to Hillside Courts from South Main
during construction work.

WORKPLACE VIOLENCE & TRAUMA CONFERENCE: The CBA Management and
Professional Development Center will sponsor "Workplace Violence & Trauma:
Are you prepared?" Friday, Sept. 22, 8:30-4:45 at Allen College. Presenters
will discuss types and causes of workplace violence and other traumatic
events, how to identify potentially dangerous people or situations,
how to develop effective programs, interventions and reactions. Conference
fee is $175 ($195 after 9/1) For more information or to register,

in Maucker Union Expansion. More than 40 not-for-profit agencies from
the Cedar Valley will be on hand to network with students about hundreds
of one-time or semester-long volunteer service projects. Please forward

MUSIC RECITAL: Denson Paul Pollard, new faculty trombonist at the UNI
School of Music, will be presenting his debut recital on Wed, Aug. 30
at 8 p.m. in the GBPAC, Davis Hall. Pollard will be joined by guest
pianist Forte Zhang and guest bass trombonist Andrey Kharlamov. The
concert will be open to the public free of charge.
