IPERS MEETINGS: Iowa Public Retirement System (IPERS) representatives
will be in the Waterloo area from July 31-Aug. 3. There will be a group
meeting at 7 p.m. July 31 in 104 Tama Hall, Hawkeye Community College.
This meeting will offer a complete overview of IPERS including the
recent changes in the Iowa law. This will be an informal session and
there will be ample opportunity for attendees to ask questions.
Individual 30 minute appointments will be scheduled between 8 a.m. and
7 p.m. Aug. 1, 2 and 3. The individual appointments will be held in
102-103 Tama Hall at HCC. To schedule an appointment, please call
IPERS at 1-800-622-3849 no later than July 28. Please make sure that
you coordinate the scheduling of an appointment with your supervisor.
P&S SALARY INCREASE PROCESS: An explanation of the P&S salary increase
process has recently been added to the Human Resources home page. The

will come to campus this week to interview for the assistant Vice
President for Marketing and Communications position. The second
candidate, Derek Hall, director of College Relations at Utah Valley
State College, will be on campus this week. A public forum will be
held Wednesday, July 5, from 3-4 p.m., in 113 CBB, in which Hall will
make an informal presentation on "Developing a Marketing and Public
Relations Oriented University." The meeting is open to the public.

NEW EMPLOYEE: The Office of Compliance and Equity Management would
like you to welcome Leah Gutknecht, who accepted the position as
Associate Director. Leah's responsibilities will include investigating
allegations of discrimination, providing consultation with university
employees and students concerning civil rights policies and regulations,
providing approval for employment searches; and disseminating information
on non-discrimination and affirmative action policies.
a section of Nebraska Street will closed for reconstruction. Nebraska
Street will be closed from just south of the entrance to the Wellness/
Recreation metered parking lot, north to the intersection with 22nd St.
Access to the Wellness/Recreation metered parking lot and the UNI-Dome
north overhead door will be unavailable during the construction period.
The street is anticipated to be re-opened to traffic in four to five weeks,
weather permitting. Thank you for you cooperation.
GRADUATE COLLEGE AWARDS: The UNI Graduate College recently presented
awards to graduate students and a member of the graduate faculty.
Awards were presented for outstanding doctoral dissertation, outstanding
master's thesis, outstanding master's research paper and outstanding
graduate faculty teaching.
NOT JUST FOR MUSIC MAJORS: Rod Library has recently refurbished the
listening area in the Art and Music Collection (3rd floor, west side).
Six new individual stations were purchased for listening to CDs,
cassettes, and LPs. Use of these stations is not limited solely to
music majors and faculty. Come by and check it out, or borrow some
recordings to listen to at home.
HALF-PRICE FITNESS CLASSES: WRS fitness classes will be half-price

KUDOS CORRECTION: There was an error in the July 3 issue of CNN
regarding the next publication of Kudos. The next Kudos will be
published Aug. 28. Deadline for submission is Aug. 18.
UNI MEDIA COVERAGE: Nationally recognized math educator and UNI professor
of mathematics, Paul Trafton, recently addressed a group of sixth-through
eighth-grade teachers to explain the "math wars" being fought in the media.
The story was covered by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier and the
Associated Press (AP). The Courier's story ran in its Friday, June 23
edition. The AP story ran in the June 24 Des Moines Register. The topic
prompted the Courier to print an editorial in its Sunday, June 25
edition. The editorial, which highlighted many of Trafton's key points,

ROD LIBRARY CURRENT DISPLAYS: The Exhibits Committee at Rod Library
invites you to check out the current displays:
1) "Iowa Adventures" located in the main lobby, included are free travel
guides and brochures.
2) "Paper Clip Attraction" located in the Reference area. This display
includes text about the history of paper clips and the controversy over
who invented them.
3) "Iowa & Midwestern Studies" located on the 1st floor.
NPPS NEWS COVERAGE: The National Program for Playground Safety, based
at UNI, has had news coverage recently from the Associated Press,
CNN.COM, WebMD and Accenthealth.com.

EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT: The Management and Professional Development Center
of the UNI College of Business will present "Diversity in the Workplace"
on Friday, July 7 and Wednesday, July 12 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in 1-3 CBB.
The workshop leader is UNI Psychology Professor Frank Barrios. The sessions
are a part of the MPDC's ongong Management Training Consortium. Tuition is
$132 and includes participant materials, lunch, and light morning and

MUSEUM EXHIBIT OPENED JULY 1: "Temple & Village: Patterns and Prints of
India" offers an introduction to the history and culture of India through
a colorful cross-section of regional textiles which embodies religious
practice, ritual, the home environment and various customs. Over 50
textiles are included in this exhibit. The exhibit will be on display
at the University Museum July 1-November 25. Museum hours are
9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Mondays-Fridays and 1-4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
