REGENTS REACT TO PROPOSED BUDGET CUTS: Members of the Board of Regents
reacted strongly Thursday to a proposal by House Republicans that would
cut approximately $15.5 million from Governor Tom Vilsack’s fiscal year
2001 education budget recommendations. The plan details cuts for each of
the Regent institutions, including a $1.4 million cut at UNI. Negotiations
are continuing in Des Moines to determine the final FY 2001 state budget
and level of educational funding.

CENTER FOR MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION LECTURE SERIES: The CME 4th Annual
Lecture Series "The Political Landscape of Multiculturalism in the 21st
Century" will be held Monday, March 27-Wednesday, March 29. The series
will feature Patricia Duarte, Manning Marable, and Winona LaDuke. Each
lecture will be held in 2532 McCollum. For more information contact
the Center for Multicultural Education at 3-2250.

GBPAC PARKING LOT: The Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center will
soon be turned over to the University. Parking is currently prohibited
in the lot, with the exception of construction vehicles. Once the
building is turned over to the University and the lot is open for parking,
it will be a visitor lot. Persons with University parking permits will
not be allowed to park there, with the exception of those person's who
have handicap parking permits and use the handicap parking stalls.
Eventually a park and pay structure will be installed, and it will be
for the use of visitors to the University. If you have any questions,
please contact Ann in the Department of Public Safety.

National Student Employment Week. You may also nominate any outstanding
student for "UNI Student Employee of the Year". All nominees will receive
a certificate and one will be honored with a plaque. Please submit your

CHANGE LEADERSHIP: Doug Whittle, Performance Development Manager for
Pioneer Hi-Bred, will conduct a workshop April 13, 3:30-4:45 p.m., in
247 SEC. Doug will provide a hands-on opportunity for you to assess
your views related to change; learn about the 4 phases of the change
curve; identify skills to manage change; and learn how to lead others

EVENTS

ANNUAL STUDENT ART EXHIBITION: Tonight at 7 p.m., the Department of
Art and Galleries will present its Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition
in the KAB. The competition showcases outstanding recent works by
undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Art. At 8 p.m.,
awards totaling $3,000 will be given to deserving students by various
departments and donors. The exhibition will be on display through
April 19th and is free to the public.

DIFFICULT DIALOGUES LECTURE: Difficult Dialogues will featuring Que Lan,
UNI assistant professor of Biology, addressing "Working for Respect",
Friday, March 24, noon-1:30 p.m., Center for Multicultural Education.
Born in Wuhan, China, Dr. Que Lan will engage in a discussion of the
barriers she faced as a woman entering the academic world of science,
and now as a professional in entomology.

UNI BASEBALL THIS WEEKEND: Northern Iowa Baseball opens their home
conference schedule this Friday afternoon versus SW Missouri State at
2 p.m. at Waterloo Riverfront Stadium. The series continues on Saturday
with a doubleheader beginning at noon and finishes with a single game
Sunday at noon. Cheer on Panther Baseball this weekend.

HEARST CENTER CONCERT: The Hearst Center for the Arts will be sponsoring
its fifth annual Spring Fundraiser this Saturday at 8 p.m. in Russell
Hall Auditorium. UNI faculty members Howard Aibel (pianist) and Todd
Seelye (classical guitarist) will be performing. Both musicians are
nationally and internationally known for their performing and
interpretive abilities. Cost is $15 at the door.

Founding Editor-in-Chief of Latina Magazine will open the CME 4th
annual lecture series on "The Political Landscape of Multiculturalism
in the 21st Century. Ms. Duarte will speak at 7 p.m., March 27 in
2532 McCollum. A reception follows the lecture.
