"UNIted Way 2000" was also honored by the Cedar Valley United Way with one of its "Innovations" awards.

In 1996, Tibetan monks from the Sera Je Monastery performed their traditional dances on UNI's campus. The University Museum set up the display, which runs through the end of February. -------------------------------------------------------------------- WRITING CONTEST: The English Department would like to announce the 4th Annual Roberta S. Tamres Sci-Fi Award for the best science-fiction story, poem or essay by a UNI student. The winning writer will receive $50 and the winning item will be published in the 2000 "Inner Weather" (UNI's literary magazine). Deadline is March 22. If you have questions,

After winning three straight road games, UNI women's basketball
returns to the West Gym tonight versus conference rival Creighton.
Tip-off is at 7:05 p.m. The Panthers are also at home Friday night
(Wichita State, 7:05 p.m.) and Sunday afternoon (SW Missouri State,

UNI SYMPHONIC BAND: The University Symphonic Band will be in concert
Thursday, Feb. 24, at 8 p.m. in Russell Auditorium, conducted by John
L. Baker, assisted by graduate student John Oelrich. The program will
include Celerations by John Zdechlik, Children's March by Percy Grainger,
Masada by Australian composer Ralph Hultgren, Ballet Music from "Faust"
by Charles Gounod, On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss by David Holsinger,
and Slava by Leonard Bernstein. No admission charge.

MVC TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS: Northern Iowa hosts the Missouri Valley
Conference Indoor Track Championships this Friday and Saturday in the
UNI-Dome. Events begin at 11 a.m. both days. For ticket info, call

AFRICAN-AMERICAN POETS PRESENTATION: In honor of Black History Month, three community poets will perform a combination of original work and poetry by African American poets such as Maya Angelou and Nikki Giovanni. PRESENTATION ON RACISM: Jane Elliott returns to the UNI campus to share
her controversial message on the sociology of racism. Elliott contends,
"A person who has been raised and socialized in America has been
conditioned to be a racist..." This engaging presentation will take
place on Tuesday, Feb. 29 at 7 P.M. in the Maucker Union Expansion. It
is free to the public, seating will be limited. -------------------------------------------------------------------- ARCHEOLOGY SOCIETY MEETING: The Black Hawk Regional Chapter of the Iowa Archeology Society presents "A Hopewell Mound in Central Iowa: Weekend Digging in 1908" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 1 at the Cedar Falls Public Library, 524 Main Street.
