DR. SUE FOLLON SCHOLARSHIP FOR WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP: This $1,000

scholarship recognizes students for their leadership contributions and

potential to model leadership for women. Applicants must be undergraduate

students who have completed at least their freshmen year at UNI and will

be returning for the following fall semester. Completed applications must

be submitted by 4 p.m., Friday, March 24.

UNI WINS UNITED WAY HONORS: UNI’s "UNIted Way 2000" campaign for

faculty and staff was recently recognized with a 3rd place national

award from United Way of America for campaign strategies using e-mail.

"UNIted Way 2000" was also honored by the Cedar Valley United Way with

one of its "Innovations" awards.

TIBETAN DISPLAY: Rod Library is currently displaying a Tibetan Black

Hat Dance costume in its main exhibit case. In 1996, Tibetan monks

from the Sera Je Monastery performed their traditional dances on

UNI's campus. The University Museum set up the display, which runs

through the end of February.

WRITING CONTEST: The English Department would like to announce the 4th

Annual Roberta S. Tamres Sci-Fi Award for the best science-fiction

story, poem or essay by a UNI student. The winning writer will receive

$50 and the winning item will be published in the 2000 "Inner Weather"

(UNI's literary magazine). Deadline is March 22. If you have questions,

PEER ADVISOR APPLICATIONS SOUGHT: Academic Advising Services is now

collecting applications for the Peer Advisor position (Work study and

Non-Work Study positions). Peer Advisors provide guidance for students

selecting a major, minor, or certificate program. Students who will be

teaching, have a full-time internship/co-op, or plan to graduate Fall

2001, should not apply. Applications are due March 6, 2000.

After winning three straight road games, UNI women's basketball

returns to the West Gym tonight versus conference rival Creighton.

Tip-off is at 7:05 p.m. The Panthers are also at home Friday night

(Wichita State, 7:05 p.m.) and Sunday afternoon (SW Missouri State,

2:05 p.m.).

PEACE-MAKING SKILLS FOR LEADERS SEMINAR: Greg Buntz, Executive Director

of the Iowa Peace Institute (http://www.iapeace.org), will conduct a

UNI SYMPHONIC BAND: The University Symphonic Band will be in concert

Thursday, Feb. 24, at 8 p.m. in Russell Auditorium, conducted by John

L. Baker, assisted by graduate student John Oelrich. The program will

include Celerations by John Zdechlik, Children's March by Percy Grainger,

Masada by Australian composer Ralph Hultgren, Ballet Music from "Faust"

by Charles Gounod, On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss by David Holsinger,

and Slava by Leonard Bernstein. No admission charge.

AFRICAN-AMERICAN POETS PRESENTATION: In honor of Black History Month,

three community poets will perform a combination of original work and

poetry by African American poets such as Maya Angelou and Nikki Giovanni.

Les Femmes Dujour addressing contemporary social issues from multiple

perspectives through recitation, song, and body movement. Wednesday,

INTERNATIONAL COFFEE HOUR: International Services invites you to the

monthly International Coffee Hour--but with a twist. Friday, Feb. 25,

from 4-5:30 p.m., instead of a Coffee Hour, there will be a potluck

to celebrate (belatedly) Chinese New Year as well as Valentine's Day.

Students, staff, faculty, are invited. Please bring a dish to share

PRESENTATION ON RACISM: Jane Elliott returns to the UNI campus to share

her controversial message on the sociology of racism. Elliott contends,

"A person who has been raised and socialized in America has been

conditioned to be a racist..." This engaging presentation will take

place on Tuesday, Feb. 29 at 7 P.M. in the Maucker Union Expansion. It

is free to the public, seating will be limited.

ARCHEOLOGY SOCIETY MEETING: The Black Hawk Regional Chapter of the

Iowa Archeology Society presents "A Hopewell Mound in Central Iowa:

Weekend Digging in 1908" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 1 at the Cedar

Falls Public Library, 524 Main Street. Lynn Alex, the public

archaeology coordinator for the Office of the State Archaeologist at

the University of Iowa will review early twentieth century research

on a Middle Woodland mound near Boone, Iowa.

celebrated brass ensemble, the "American Brass Quintet", on Thursday,
