The Strayer-Wood Theatre presents Mauritius

The Strayer-Wood Theatre presents Mauritius

Saturday, March 1, 2014 - 7:30 pm

Crime…Passion…Stamp Collecting? The stakes are high when two half-sisters, mourning the recent passing of their mother, inherit a book of rare stamps that may include the "crown jewel" of the stamp-collecting world. The battle for possession takes a dangerous turn when three rival collectors enter the sisters' world, and they are plunged into a seedy, cloak-and-dagger underworld.  Mauritius by Pulitzer Prize nominee and creator of the hit TV series Smash, Theresa Rebeck, is a suspenseful comedy-drama where everyone involved seems willing to bully, connive, cheat, and, if all else fails, conduct a legitimate business transaction, to gain control of the rarest of prizes. Adult language.  Directed by Steve Taft.

Graduate College Brown Bag Lecture Series: “Changing Minds, Changing Behaviors, and the Changing Climate”

Graduate College Brown Bag Lecture Series: “Changing Minds, Changing Behaviors, and the Changing Climate”

Monday, March 3, 2014 - 12:00 pm to 12:50 pm

Jack Yates, psychology, and Carole Yates, Center for Energy and Environmental Education, will present "Changing Minds, Changing Behaviors, and the Changing Climate." Can entire communities reduce energy use to win a competition and do the right thing? Yes, with know-how and community spirit. The Yates will share the results of the successful "Get Energized, Iowa!" competition among four small Iowa communities to see which could reduce the most energy use in one year. But is this enough to save the planet? No, individual actions must be followed up with collective action. The audience will be invited to think about how best to use what we know about social science to encourage local, state and national action on climate policies.

Earth Science Seminar: Earth Science and Communities: Great Earthquakes to Wild Rice

Earth Science Seminar: Earth Science and Communities: Great Earthquakes to Wild Rice

Monday, March 3, 2014 - 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm

Dr. Kenneth Ridgway, Professor of Earth and Atmospheric Science at Purdue University, will discuss the connection between earth science and communities. Such a connection seems obvious to most scientists but is much less clear to most communities. In the first part of his talk he will explore the geologic setting, the infrastructural damage, and the impact on communities of recent large earthquakes in Taiwan, Turkey, Haiti and Japan.  Decisions that communities and governments made about these types of geologic hazards had a profound impact on human life and the built environment.  In the second part of the talk, he will discuss how at Purdue University they are building connections between the scientific community and Native American communities. The strongest connections are developed when Native American students do research on issues that are directly relevant to their tribal lands and communities. An understanding of earth processes is critical in decision making both at the global and local community levels.

Film Screening and Discussion: "The Lord is Not on Trial Here Today"

Film Screening and Discussion: "The Lord is Not on Trial Here Today"

Tuesday, March 4, 2014 - 12:00 pm

"The Lord is Not On Trial Here Today" is a Peabody Award-winning documentary that tells the compelling personal story of Vashti McCollum and how her efforts to protect her 10-year-old son led to one of the most important and landmark First Amendment cases in U.S. Supreme Court history — the case that established the separation of church and state in public schools. The case is little-known by the contemporary American public, yet the McCollum decision continues to have important ramifications for current conflicts over the role of religion in public institutions – from displays of the Ten Commandments in government buildings to student-led prayers at public school graduation ceremonies. A short discussion follows the film; open to the public.

Film Screening and Discussion: "The Lord Is Not On Trial Here Today"

Film Screening and Discussion: "The Lord Is Not On Trial Here Today"

Thursday, March 6, 2014 - 7:00 pm

The Strayer-Wood Theatre presents Mauritius

The Strayer-Wood Theatre presents Mauritius

Thursday, March 6, 2014 - 7:30 pm

Film Presentation: "Hannah Arendt"

Film Presentation: "Hannah Arendt"

Friday, March 7, 2014 - 3:30 pm to 6:45 pm

Hannah Arendt was a passionate political thinker who caused outrage and vigorous disagreement by many leading American and Israeli thinkers who read her book, Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil (1963).  Adolf Eichmann was a leading figure in orchestrating the Holocaust, and in 1961 Israel captured him in Argentina and put him on trial for crimes against the Jewish people. Arendt attended the trial and wrote reports for The New Yorker which formed the basis of her book. Having been born and educated in Germany, Arendt was persecuted as a Jew by the Nazi regime, landing in jail and a concentration camp. Through a series of fortunate events, she was able to escape and eventually made her way to the United States. In the last years of her life, she taught at The New School for Social Research, where Bill Clohesy, professor of philosophy, became one of her doctoral students. Clohesy will provide commentary and lead a discussion following the film showing..

LENR:  The Promise of Clean and Affordable Energy

LENR:  The Promise of Clean and Affordable Energy

Monday, March 10, 2014 - 7:00 pm

Tom Wind, Iowa DNR officer, will provide information about Low Energy Nuclear Reactions (LENR). This relatively new technology was discovered in 1989 by two electrochemists at the University of Utah. A few determined scientists around the world continued this research to fully develop this technology with a few small companies who are on the verge of commercializing products that use this technology. This technology allows controlled fusion of hydrogen into helium in small modular reactors that can fit on a table top.  The result is abundant thermal energy, with no radiation dangers, no radioactive byproducts and no combustion of fossil fuels. The cost of the hydrogen, the necessary materials and the catalysts are but a small fraction of the cost of traditional fossil fuels. Could this be the possible energy solution of the future?

Making the Most of Surveys: Beyond Measures of Satisfaction

Making the Most of Surveys: Beyond Measures of Satisfaction

Wednesday, March 12, 2014 - 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm

The second in a three part series called "Assessing Service-Learning and Community Engagement Activities".

We’re all familiar with the kinds of surveys passed out at the end of events we’ve attended: “Did we meet your expectations?”, “What other topics would you suggest for future events?”, “How useful was the information provided?” etc. Participants may or may not complete such surveys; those who hosted the events may not find them very useful or even give them more than a cursory reading. This workshop, led by Donna Vinton, Office of Academic Assessment, will suggest some strategies for strengthening the value of surveys both for measuring the impact of events and supporting plans for future events. Co-Sponsored with the Office of Academic Assessment.

Universal Design for Learning: Moving Your Teaching Beyond the Conventional 'One-Size Fits All' Paradigm

Universal Design for Learning: Moving Your Teaching Beyond the Conventional 'One-Size Fits All' Paradigm

Monday, March 24, 2014 - 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm

Led by Ashley Brickley, Disability Services; Christine Curran, Special Education; and Deb Gallagher, Special Education.

As university instructors, we all know that teaching is far more than telling students what they should know. And while we strive to create vibrant learning communities that foster interaction and communication among students and their teacher, we often rely on the seemingly “tried and true” transfer of content from instructor to students. Not surprisingly, we find that this approach rarely promotes deep learning and fails to engage all too many students.

This session will demonstrate how you can use Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Assistive Technology to move beyond the conventional ‘one-size fits all’ paradigm and toward varied and flexible ways to:

• Present information and content in different forms,
• Differentiate the forms through which students can demonstrate what they know, and
• Deepen student interest, personal investment, and motivation for learning

Grounded in research on learner differences and effective instructional settings, UDL provides all students with equal opportunities to learn through activities that are collaborative, engaging, and designed to enable students to construct meaningful knowledge from their classroom experiences
