Conferences, Workshops and Camps

Camp Multimedia (CMM) promotes digital skills and project-based learning. The camp limit of 30 students ensures plenty of one-on-one instruction. Students create their own interactive, integrated media projects with guidance and demonstrations from our exceptional instructors and teaching assistants. Students leave CMM with a professional project, new friendships, and the confidence to continue creating. Individual areas of focus this year are scheduled to include Animation, Video Podcasting, Video Game Design and Advanced Video Game Design. Limited scholarships anticipated to be available. 

8:45 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. each day.

Ages: 12 - 15 (students going in to 6th grade through students leaving 9th grade)

Cost: $249 ($199 if paid by May 30)

This camp is designed for girls in grades kindergarten through fifth grades who are eager to have lots of creative learning and challenging experiences. Learn how to sew on a sewing machine, do stitchery, quiltmaking, crochet, braid, create your own books and stories. Daily use of technolgy for each girl is a highlight of this camp!

Enjoy the experience of being on a university campus, eating lunch in one of the dining centers, visit various sites on campus, especially the Wellness/Recreation Center where we will try a little rock climbing (only if interested), volleyball, badminton, racquetball, basketball, aerobics and more!

9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily

Ages: Grades K-5

Cost: $110.00 per week 

Main Camp Objectives:

• Mechanical construction:
• Complete construction of a functioning mini-sumo robot. These are autonomous vehicles, designed each to push an opponent off of a 30" circular arena.
• Computer programming (IsoMax Forth language) permitted and encouraged, but not required.
• All necessary code for effective functioning of the sumo will be provided.
• Students with a special interest in code often make significant contributions to the camp through code development and exploration.

The camp culminates with a public mini-sumo robot competition, to which parents are invited.

Ages: Rising eighth grade through rising high school juniors

Cost: $345. Add about $200 for the residential option

This session is designed to allow girls to use their creativity and imagination by using a variety of musical instruments, scarves, jump ropes, hula hoops, art materials, and creating their own original games and toys! Using environmental materials will enhance these learning experiences. Each student will have daily and individual access to technology as well as a wealth of children's books and literacy materials! Enjoy the honor of visiting various sites on UNI's campus and eating lunch daily in UNI's dining center!

Ages: Grades K-5

Cost: $110 per week 

In 'STEM's Growing in the Garden' summer camp participants will enjoy a week of learning how science, math, health and nutrition all play a vital role in growing a garden. Students will explore Botany, Chemistry, Entomology, Microbiology, Math, Technology and Nutrition while actively gardening through the week. This camp is open to students entering 8th grade in the fall of 2013 through 12th grade.

9 a.m. to noon daily

Ages: entering 8th - 12th graders

Cost: $100

It is encouraged that campers live in residence halls on campus and eat their meals at the college dining center. Committed and attentive UNI music education students will guide campers as counselors supervising the halls and leading campers through daily activities. Day campers will be expected to be on campus for all scheduled activities (usually from 8:30 a.m.-8 p.m. each day)

Campers work alongside a diverse string faculty who teach and perform around North America. Focus is given to various areas of string playing each day through guided listening and musicianship seminars.

Private lessons are encouraged for all campers. Participants are encouraged to choose one hour of private lessons (broken into two 30-minute lessons during the week) at an additional cost of $40. Campers taking private lessons should bring a piece of music they have been working on.

All campers must bring their own instrument to camp.

Open to all string players in grades 6- 8 who have at completed at least one full year of study on their instrument, each day will be focused on improving basic string technique and understanding how to make music together through individual/group lessons, enrichment classes, and string ensemble.

The camp will culminate with a performance for all campers in the Great Hall of the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. on July 13th. The performance is free and open to the public. All campers must participate in the final concert. DVDs of the concert will be available for purchase following the concert.

Ages: 6th- 8th grade (minimum of one year of instrument study required)

Cost: $275 resident campers (early registration); $295 resident campers (late registration); $175 day campers (early registration); $195 day campers (late registration)

Where could science take YOU this summer? Follow the path of the sun's energy through ecosystems and you could end up in all kinds of cool places! Paddle a kayak to the middle of a lake and find out what organisms are harvesting solar energy in the water. Explore a prairie, then figure out how much energy it stores in a week by burning samples in your own calorimeter. Wander woods and streams on a night hike, tracking down the animals to find out what they eat and how they live. By week's end, you'll report on your discoveries to your fellow campers, family and friends. JOIN US this summer for a Wild Energy Adventure.

8 am- 2 pm daily and one night hike 9 pm-11 pm

Ages: entering 9-12th graders

Cost: $150 - registration AND lunch

The Diversity Inclusion Workshop offers participants an opportunity to meet people from across campus with a community-building, highly interactive and positive skill-based approach. All students, merit staff, professional & scientific staff, administrators and faculty are invited and strongly encouraged to attend. The workshop is facilitated by the NCBI-UNI Campus Coalition Builders and sponsored by the Offices of the President, Executive Vice President & Provost, Vice President for Student Affairs and Vice President for Administration & Financial Services. Lunch is provided. Participants must pre-register and be able to attend the entire day.
