The Center for Multicultural Education will host journalist Touré. In the age of Obama, racial attitudes have become more complicated and nuanced than ever before. Inspired by a president who is unlike any Black man ever seen on our national stage, we are searching for new ways of understanding Blackness. In Touré’s provocative new book, he tackles what it means to be Black in America today. He examines the concept of “Post-Blackness,” a term that defines artists who are proud to be Black but don’t want to be limited by identity politics and boxed in by race. Touré argues that Blackness is infinite, that any identity imaginable is Black and that all expressions of Blackness are legitimate. A book club session on Who’s Afraid of Post-Blackness: What It Means to Be Black Now will be held prior to the lecture from 3:30-5:00 p.m. at the CME.

Brenda Bass will discuss the psychology of consumer behavior and money. Bring your lunch and join the Office of Student Financial Aid in learning about your financial future. The workshop will conclude with a drawing for food and t-shirt prizes!

Wanda Everage, vice provost for student affairs at Drake University, will present "The Expanding Definition of Diversity." The lecture is sponsored by the Student Affairs Pre-Professional Association, in collaboration with NISG. Everage is a recipient of numerous awards for leadership, diversity, and career and educational excellence.

For most students, faculty and staff at UNI the most basic tasks of humanity require little thought, such as what bathroom to use, what pronoun you are called, if you are safe in the residence halls and at home. However, for students, faculty and staff who do not identify with the gender and/or sex assigned to them at birth, students, faculty and staff with disabilities, students, faculty and staff with children, and other student, faculty and staff populations who somehow identify on the outskirts of “normal”, finding a safe bathroom is an important concern for which they struggle daily. This event will serve two goals:
1. To raise awareness regarding trans*gender issues on campus and in our society.
2. To bring the discussion of gender neutral bathrooms and gender neutral housing to the attention of the general campus community in an informative manner.

Starting at 10:30AM, a group of protest volunteers will be lined up outside the Ballroom bathrooms and using the restrooms as a collective, not assigned by their gender.

Loren Rex Cameron is a renowned photographer known for his photography of transsexual people during their gender transition. This presentation will focus on Loren Cameron's journey and his photography models. He will speak about his own transition, his art and his models. The presentation is a relaxed and informative way to introduce the topic of transgender. 

The Center for Multicultural Education will host a roundtable discussion on what it means to be "multicultural."
