The subtext of the movie, Soul Food, is about the fatal illness of a family’s matriarch because of the food she was eating. Soul Food Junkies recognizes not only the politics within the food industry but also its challenges of both the obvious and the subtle ones. Whereas Byron Hurt lifts up the traditions of soul food, he explores the negative effects that the food industry has on those who are poor, exploited, and marginalized by limited food options, especially persons of color.
Darwin Week is an annual event sponsored by the UNI Freethinkers & Inquirers to promote critical thinking and reason. Faculty speakers will present at 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Feb. 10 and 12; and at 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Feb. 11 and 13. Keynote lectures are at 7 p.m. each evening. Buffalo Wild Wings and Coldstone Creamery in Cedar Falls will donate a portion of proceeds to the Circle of Sisterhood Foundation, which raises money to fund schools in poverty stricken areas and to help break barriers for women's education. Hours at Coldstone Creamery are 6-9 p.m. Mention sorority life or Circle of Sisterhood and part of your meal's proceeds will be donated.
This celebration of the arts will include an art sale and silent auction from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm and a variety show from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. This is a free will donation event and is open to all students in addition to individuals from the Cedar Valley community. All proceeds raised will go towards the school that we are working to build in El Salvador.
UNI Dance Marathon will host the 2nd Annual Black Tie Affair. All are welcome to enjoy a night of class and participate in a rave, poker/blackjack, photobooth, redbull and fingerfoods. Tickets are $5 per couple, $3 per individual; formal attire.
Alpha Phi Omega's co-ed service group will tie blankets to donate to the House of Hope. This is also an information meeting for anyone with questions about becoming a member or helping in the community.
