Pie an ADPi

United States Intervention in Honduras and Its Effect on Indigenous Peoples

Since the military coup in 2009, Honduras has been in a human rights crisis. The
Honduran military and police, responsible for egregious human rights violations, have received millions
from the United States in arms and training. Tomas Gómez Membreño is visiting us at from Honduras, where he works for the non-profit Indigenous rights organization COPINH (Civic Council of Popular Indigenous Organizations).
COPINH has been working to expose the role of the United States in the coup and its aftermath.

Do Run Run 5K

PRSSA has sponsored a 5K run/walk charity event for more than 20 years. This year “strip & go run” runners will donate a piece of clothing at five checkpoints during the race to benefit St. Vincent’s De Paul Society. Pre-registration is $20; race day registration is $25. Register through Facebook event or by mail.

Victim Service Institute

The Center for Violence Prevention will host a Victim Service Institute. Roger Canaff, anti-violence advocate and legal expert, will present “Balancing Victim Services with Threats Posed by Repeat Offenders: Best Practices for Keeping Your Campus Safe” and “Understanding and Working with Counter-Intuitive Victim Behavior." Kristina Korbov, director of prosecutor education, Indianapolis, will present “Did Yardley Love Have to Die: College Dating Violence, Institutional Response, and Victim Blaming” and one break-out session titled “Laying the Groundwork for a Winnable Case."

Invisible Children: The Frontline Tour

Since the beginning of 2011, Joseph Kony and the LRA have abducted 1,023 people in central Africa; 1,023 lives in the hands of this rebel army. In response, 16 teams will be traveling across the country (each with a Ugandan Roadie) on our Frontline Tour across the US and Canada. These roadie teams will raise money and awareness for our projects to directly protect people from LRA violence. Our event will include a screening of the latest documentary, followed by a Q&A session!

Sept. 11 Flag Planting

Faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to join the Northern Iowa Student Government for a Flag Planting Remembrance. Individuals are invited to plant a flag in memory of each person who lost their life on 9/11. A moment of silence will be held at 8:37 a.m., 8:59 a.m., 9:03 a.m. and 9:28 a.m. (all CST), to commemorate the collapse of the World Trade Center Towers, the attack on the Pentagon and the crash in Pennsylvania.
