Students discuss the challenges and opportunities they have had while transitioning from military service to college life, or balancing both at the same time.
The Student Affairs Pre-Professional Association (SAPA) will host a resume workshop. Professionals representing such offices as the Dean of Students, Registrar and Career Services will review resumes of those attending. This is an opportunity to ask questions, recieve helpful suggestions, learn more about the field of student affairs and improve your resume.
Follow the Marines into the heart of the war in Afghanistan. Their target: the town of Marjah, a Taliban stronghold. Their tasks: remove the Taliban, hold all ground seized, build infrastructure and governance, and transfer control to Afghan security forces. Q&A will follow with a Marine who was part of the Battle for Marjah and can give insight to decisions made and what is was like to be on the ground.

A return of a popular session at this year's Military and Veterans Conference. Timothy Tolliver and Ronald Devoll, Jr., Army veterans and masters of social work students, will discuss what the term “trauma informed” means and how you can use it to benefit your students. Trauma informed care seeks to change the paradigm from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”
The UNIVA invites all military and civilian campus members to honor military and veteran students and faculty. Dr. William Ruud, 10th president of UNI and Army Veteran, will be the keynote speaker. There will be an informal social at the AmVets after the ball.
This is a formal occasion. Active Duty, Reserve and Guard Service members are strongly encouraged to wear their dress uniforms. Veterans may also where their dress uniforms if they desire; however, the UNIVA is planning on having service designating pins available for Veterans to wear during the ball. Select your service affiliation when you register to ensure enough pins are ordered.

Dr. Meredith Kleykamp, associate professor of sociology at the University of Maryland, will be the keynote speaker for the Military and Veterans State conference. Her studies focus on the military culture and the soldier's transition back into civilian life. The goal of the conference is to educate participants about the military culture and the diversity service members bring to campus.
Breakout Sessions: Various sessions throughout the day discuss the unique aspects of military and family culture, how colleges and universities can best be prepared to help military members succeed and give tools to help overcome the challenges of transitioning back into civilian life.
The conference is free to UNI employees. The Military Friendly Employment fair will run concurrently.
The Rainbow Reception is an opportunity for UNI students, faculty and staff to welcome lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans* and ally students to campus for the new academic year. This event is an evening of information sharing, networking, fellowship and dessert.
