Gender-free: Bystander approaches that move us beyond “Tough Guise” and “Sexy Empowerment"

Media and social media portray and depict carefully crafted messaging and messages to America’s youth on what it means to be a woman or a man. What social norms and thresholds of behaviors distinguish when a girl or woman is considered “hot” and “desirable” as opposed to a “slut” or “whore?” To what extent are boys and men held to similar standards of behavior – or are they?

Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) Workshop

MVP is a widely acclaimed leadership program that motivates both men and women to play a central role in solving problems that historically have been considered “women’s issues:” rape, relationship abuse, sexual assault and harassment. The MVP approach views all individuals not as potential perpetrators or victims, but as empowered bystanders who can recognize and confront harassment and abuse before, during and after the fact. This will be an interactive workshop and is sponsored by Student Wellness Services.
