Angela Davis: "Finding Your Way: Organizing for Social Change and Human Rights"

Angela Davis, civil and women's rights icon, will deliver a lecture titled "Finding Your Way: Organizing for Social Change and Human Rights." Davis is also the keynote speaker for the Annual Conference on Human Rights, sponsored by the Waterloo Commission on Human Rights. Davis will sit on a panel discussing her lecture and what lies ahead for young and older activists on Friday, Nov. 8.

"The Other Side of Paradise"

Staceyann Chin is the recipient of the 2007 Power of the Voice Award from the Human Rights Campaign, the 2008 Safe Haven Award from Immigration Equality, the 2008 Honors from the Lesbian AIDS Project and the 2009 New York State Senate Award. She unapolegetically identifies as Caribbean and Black, Asian and lesbian, woman and resident of New York. A proud Jamaican National, Staceyann's voice was featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show, where she spoke candidly about her experiences growing up on the island and the dire consequences of her coming-out there.

Building Healthy Communities Conference

This two-day conference is offered to Cedar Valley professionals and community members and includes Black Hawk/Grundy Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence; Antioch Baptist Church; Faith Community; YWCA of Black Hawk County; Department of Corrections, First Judicial District; Peace and Justice Center of the Cedar Valley. Keynote presentations will be held on the UNI campus on Oct. 8, followed by a training day on Oct. 9 held in three locations in the Cedar Valley.

UNI Latino Fest

The Hispanic Latino Student Union and Art for El Salvador will host the first UNI Latino Fest. Activities during the event include: Calle Sur (Latin American music), Zumba, Hispanic dancing, UNI Salsa band, children’s activites, Art for El Salvador service art sale and authentic food tasting. The fest is free and all are welcome.

Hispanic Heritage Month Guest Speaker: Sandra Guzmán

The Center for Multicultural Education will host Sandra Guzmán, award-winning journalist and author of The New Latina's Bible: The Modern Latina's Guide to Love, Family, Spirituality, and La Vida. She was one of the interviewers on HBO's doumentary film The Latino List, which featured interviews with notable indivudals including Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Sonia Sotomayor, Eva Longoria, Pitbull and America Ferrera.
