Lifelong University: The Sacred Myths of Judaism

Every religious tradition has its sacred myths, those fundamental stories, ideas and beliefs that define a tradition and which delivers meaning and values to those who are members of that community. This course will explore the sacred myths of Judaism and how they have developed over time. It will provide a guided tour through the lively terrain of Jewish intellectual history from ancient to modern times. This four-session class will be taught by Hal Wohl. The fee for this class is $40.

Lifelong University- Contemporary American Literature

Participants will read and discuss contemporary literature including "Life Among the Lutherans" by Garrison Keillor; Scott Cawelti's "Brother's Blood" about the 1975 murders of the Iowa Mark family; and "Girls on the Roof," a book-length poem by former Iowa poet laureate Mary Swander. Field trips and discussions with the authors are possible. Participants need to buy and read Keillor's "Life Among the Lutherans" before classes start. The book is available at University Book and Supply. Excerpts of the other two books will be read in class. This four-session class will be taught by Kimberley Groninga. The cost for this class is $40.

Lifelong University: Photoshop Elements Workshop

In this course you will learn entry level and advanced photo-editing skills using Photoshop Elements 10. You will learn the basics of digital photography and how to use the features in Photoshop Elements for organizing, editing, enhancing and sharing your photos. By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • -Take visually appealing photos
  • -Upload your photos to Photoshop Elements
  • -Organize your photos into albums and catalogs
  • -Edit, enhance and add special effects to your photos
  • -Create calendars and other creative work
  • -Size and print your photos and projects
  • -Share you projects in online albums, slideshows and more

This class is limited to the first 15 people and participants must being their own camers. This class includes four sessions and is taught by Lynn Dykstra and will cost $40.
