Jazz Camp Curriculum

• Combo Rehearsals: Rehearse with your combo twice a day.
• Instrumental Master Classes: Group instructions on your instrument, provided by a working professional.
• Theory and Improvisation (taught in three levels):
  • Level I: Focus on key signatures, scales and chord spelling
  • Level II: Concentrate on chord extensions, harmonic analysis and basic chord substitution
  • Level III: Tailored to meet the needs of advanced students enrolled (small section)
• Ear Training and Transcription: Activities such as interval and chord identification, transcription and guided listening
• Faculty and Student Concerts
• Jam Sessions
• Recreational Activities and much more!

Ages: High school students, those going into 10th grade and above

Cost: Resident Camper - $500 if postmarked by May 1; $535 after May 1

The Adapted Sports Camp is the only opportunity in the state for youth using wheelchairs to compete in recreational sports. Athletes can participate in track and field, basketball, hand cycling, football, rugby, softball, tennis and many others. The goal is to get most athletes with a disability to learn that they have many abilities to achieve success in sports activities, and then translate that to have the confidence to look at many other obstacles that may come up in their lives and find a way to overcome them.

"Smart Art" students will gain appreciation for their outdoor environment by spending time outside and creating works of art from natural debris. The advantages and disadvantages of recycling waste materials and the impact human excess has on the environment will be addressed by looking at contemporary artists who are using their own work as calls to action. Students will also have the opportunity to create a large, collaborative work using materials that would otherwise be discarded but have instead been collected through the Iowa Waste Exchange (a website that helps to distribute miscellaneous factory remnants). By using their creativity and innovation all students will have the opportunity to "upcycle" garbage and everyday objects into something that has both visual impact and a positive impact on their community.

UNI CMS Camp Musicmania is a multifaceted music and arts camp whose primary purpose is to provide fun and innovative activities that will engage campers in the excitement of exploring singing, dancing, drumming, Orff activities, drama, art, and the Camp Musical Theme "BONES" ! Although the theme of the camp will be "Bones", the production and performance of the actual Musical will be for the older age division (4th-9th grades). The younger age division (K-3rd) will enjoy age appropriate activities that incorporate the same theme... but will have their own parent performance to showcase their talents and share their camp activities. The two separate Age Division performances will be given on Friday. Instructors include UNI Faculty, UNI music, drama, and art education majors, and area music, drama, and art educators. Limited Scholarship monies are available. Early registration is strongly recommended. Registration Deadline: June 1, 2013

Cost: K-3 $75. 4-9 $95. Cost includes Camp T-shirt and snacks.

North Star Community Services' Inclusive Community Theatre presents "Peter Pan." The play features actors of all abilities who have come together to build sets, make costumes and produce a quality full length musical.

The Diversity Inclusion Workshop offers participants an opportunity to meet people from across campus with a community-building, highly interactive and positive skill-based approach. All students, merit staff, professional & scientific staff, administrators and faculty are invited and strongly encouraged to attend. The workshop is facilitated by the NCBI-UNI Campus Coalition Builders and sponsored by the Offices of the President, Executive Vice President & Provost, Vice President for Student Affairs and Vice President for Administration & Financial Services. Lunch is provided. Participants must pre-register and be able to attend the entire day.
