Guest Lecture: America’s Foreign Policy Challenges – Where do you Draw the Line?

McMullen, currently Diplomat-in-Residence at the University of Texas at Austin. McMullen recently served as U.S. Ambassador to the State of Eritrea. He has more than 29 years of diplomatic experience and has lived, worked or traveled in 90 countries. A native of Northwood, Iowa, he earned his doctorate in political science from the University of Iowa. The lecture will be followed by a question and answer session. McMullen's visit is sponsored by International Prograns, Center for International Peace and Security Studies, and the Department of Political Science.

"Lab School Legends": A Tribute to Ken Butzier and Dr. Leslie Hale
Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 11/18/2011 - 9:00pmFilm star Annabeth Gish and Gary Kroeger of "Saturday Night Live" fame will headline a tribute to longtime Malcolm Price Laboratory School music and drama directors Dr. Les Hale and Ken Butzier, who joined the MPLS faculty in 1960. For more than a quarter of a century they launched actors, designers, playwrights, directors, opera (and other professional) singers, instrumentalists and composers. The tribute will consist of an evening of special performances from MPLS alums, including songs from Broadway musicals sung by Kroeger, Kristin Teig Torres, Chris O’Connor, Rhonda Williams, Gavin Mauer and Stephanie Althof. Tony Tomlyanovich will perform an opera selection. Annabeth Gish will appear via video as she will be filming a mini-series with Pierce Brosnan.
An hors d’oeuvres and cash bar reception will begin at 6 p.m. in the Auditorium lobby along with a silent auction. Tickets for the event are $25. All funds will go to support MPLS' mission as the state’s research and development school. Reservations can be made by calling 273-2185.

Nuclear Energy in Iowa

Deaton has been speaking and writing about nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear energy since 2009. He will discuss the relationship between nuclear proliferation and nuclear power, and give an update on the bills in the Iowa legislature regarding the proposed nuclear plant for Iowa.
