Fiction Reading: J. Harley McIlrath

UNI graduate J. Harley McIlrath will read from his book of short fiction Possum Trot. McIlrath is the founder and proprietor of the Cedar Falls bookstore Bought again Books. Possum Trot has been described as "wickedly funny" by author Ralph Savarese, and as "Americana as the National Resonator guitars the title story is based on" by blues musician Joe Price. This event is free and open to the public; the room is accessible.

Natural Areas and Ecological Management Seminar

Molly Schlumbohm, a graduate student at the Tallgrass Prairie Center, will present "Maximizing Biomass Production of Prairie Vegetation as an Alternative Energy Source."  Schlumbohm studied four treatments to determine the best mixture of prairie vegetation to maximize the production of biomass on marginal farmland.  This biomass can be used as an alternative energy source to coal. Refreshments will be provided.

Health Care Audience Debate

The UNI Forensics team, in conjunction with the League of Women Voters, will host an audience debate on health care. Using the resolution: "RESOLVED: The U.S. Federal Government should repeal the current federal health care plan (known as Obamacare)." This event is an opportunity for UNI students to debate one of the most important political issues in the United States. The debate will feature members of the UNI debate team who will use suggestions from the public to shape their debate speeches. Audience members can submit questions and debate topics to the UNI Speech and Debate Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/events/247155845340693/) by noon on Dec. 6. Health care experts will be on hand to answer questions. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. This event is free and open to the public
