Guest Lecture: The Future of Eurozone: The European Project at a Crossroads

"The Future of Eurozone: The European Project at a Crossroads" will be presented by Austrian Consul General Thomas Schnoell. Schnoell is a career diplomat and was appointed Consul General of Austria in Chicago in January 2010. He earned a Masters Degree in Law from Johannes Kepler University in Linz before joining the Austrian Foreign Ministry in 1997. In 1998 he was posted to the Austrian Embassy in Paris, where he dealt with French internal politics and consular affairs. In 2001 he was posted to the Permanent Representation of Austria to the European Union in Brussels, where he was responsible for the Western Balkans and covered most of the Successor States of the former Yugoslavia. Schnoell returned to Vienna in 2004, where he was appointed Head of Unit for the Western Balkans. After his experience in Europe, notably in the EU and South Eastern Europe, he now faces a completely different challenge with his appointment as Head of Mission in Chicago.  Schnoell's visit is sponsored by International Programs, Center for International Peace and Security Studies, and the Department of Political Science.

Guest Artist Recital: Ricardo Rapoport, bassoon

Visiting artist Ricardo Rapoport, bassoon, will present a recital. Born in Brazil, where he first studied the bassoon and performed professionally, Rapoport continued on to France where he was awarded a First Prize from the Paris Conservatory, and studied with the world renowned French bassoonist Maurice Allard. He has recorded extensively with many of the most important period orchestras in Europe today, such as Le Concert Spiritual, and le petite Bande, and his recently released CD of the Dard Six Sonatas for bassoon has won critical acclaim. This event is free and open to the public.
