Executive Vice President and Provost

Newspapers play an important role in a democracy by contributing to an informed public. Nancy Newhoff, Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier editor, will discuss the Courier's focus, how news is selected and trends affecting newspapers. Under the direction of UNI professor of flute Angeleita Floyd, the Northern Iowa Flute Choir and Flute Studio will present its annual concert. This event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Matthew Rizzo, University of Iowa, will present "The Aging Mind and Brain Cluster Initiative." The presentation is part of the Iowa Consortium of Aging Programs Spring Colloquia Series and will be presented via ICN.

John W. Johnson, department of history, will discuss how he and his students examine critical thinking and the electronic media in the "Analysis of Social Issues" Capstone. Those planning to attend the lecture should take a 24-hour "e-media holiday." This means that you "fast" from all electronic media for one day--no TV, no cell phone, no computer, no internet, no e-reader, no iPod, no iPad and no car radio. Come prepared to discuss how you coped with being unconnected--if only for a day. Free and open to the public. The Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education and the Arnold Liebster Foundation of Davenport are making this exhibit available to schools and libraries around the state.  Created by the Arnold-Liebster Foundation, this exhibit of 13 framed panels examines the lives and experiences of young Jehovah’s Witnesses who suffered as a result of the their refusal to accept Nazi ideology. In raising awareness about an important form of non-violent resistance to tyranny and persecution, the exhibit can stimulate thought and discussion of contemporary forms of intolerance and bullying and in the uses of civil disobedience and non-violent resistance.

UNI School of Music faculty artist Amanda McCandless will present a clarinet recital. This event is free and open to the public.

Under the direction of UNI adjunct professor of double bass Hunter Capoccioni, the UNI bass studio will present a double bass concert with a romantic theme. This event is free and open to the public.
