Screening and discussion of the documentary film Children in No Man’s Land which uncovers the plight of unaccompanied immigrant minors entering the United States.  This event is part of Dreams Deferred ... Dreams Held Fast, a film and discussion series sponsored by the Center for Multicultural Education and the Rod Library in association with the UNI 2012-13 Reaching for Higher Ground project theme The Search for an American Dream.  Film will be used as the basis for personal reflection and dialogue in addressing the nature and meaning of “American Dream” relative to issues of marginalization and privilege. Participants will be challenged to examine their own beliefs and assumptions about being American today.

Screening and discussion of the feature film Under the Same Moon (starring Kate Del Castillo of Telemundo’s La Reina del Sur) about a young Mexican boy who travels to the U.S. to find his mother after his grandmother passes away. Karen Fischer, Collection Analysis librarian at the University of Iowa, will present Author Rights, Author Addendums and Copyright. The presentation is open to the campus.

Screening of the film Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero will be followed by a panel discussion of local faith leaders.

Screening of the film Ghosts of Abu Ghraib will be followed by a discussion in the use of torture in the "War on Terror."

The Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education and the Arnold Liebster Foundation of Davenport are making this exhibit available to schools and libraries around the state.  Created by the Arnold-Liebster Foundation, this exhibit of 13 framed panels examines the lives and experiences of young Jehovah’s Witnesses who suffered as a result of the their refusal to accept Nazi ideology. In raising awareness about an important form of non-violent resistance to tyranny and persecution, the exhibit can stimulate thought and discussion of contemporary forms of intolerance and bullying and in the uses of civil disobedience and non-violent resistance.

Screening of the film Watch What You Say: Free Speech in Times of National Crisis will be followed by a discussion of free speech rights.

Amy Stewart, best-sellling author of Wicked Plants: The Weed That Killed Lincoln's Mother and Other Botanical Atrocities, will be visiting Rod Library, the Cedar Falls Public Library and the Waterloo Public Library through Skype.
