Waterloo Women of the Great Migration who worked in domestic service in Mississippi and other Deep South states share memories of life under the harsh conditions of segregation. These are stories of daily cruelties, but also of resilience and finally of resistance. Their stories have been memorialized in "The Maid Narratives: Black Domestics and White Families in the Jim Crow South," recently published by LSU Press. Facilitated by Charletta Sudduth and Katherine van Wormer.

Brian Jones, Department of Religion and Philosophy at Wartburg College, will present “The Tale of Sodom and Gomorrah as an Exercise in Historical Geography."  The event is free and open to the public.

To kick off Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Feminist Action League is hosting a screening of the documentary film, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.   Half the Sky is based on the book of the same title written by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. 

The documentary , as PBS describes, is “filmed in 10 countries, the series follows Nicholas Kristof and celebrity activists America Ferrera, Diane Lane, Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Gabrielle Union and Olivia Wilde on a journey to tell the stories of inspiring, courageous individuals. Across the globe oppression is being confronted, and real meaningful solutions are being fashioned through health care, education, and economic empowerment for women and girls.”  

Donations to benefit survivors of domestic and sexual violence will also be collected at the screening.  Feminist Action League is holding a donation drive for Cedar Valley Friends of the Family and will be collecting NEW sweat pants, t-shirts, bras, underwear, and socks.  Donations can also be dropped off in the Women’s and Gender Studies office (Sabin 225) from 9:00am to 4:00pm throughout the month of October.

Dr. Kate Lavelle, communications studies, will present “Playing Like a Man – Representations of Gender and Athleticism in Sports." Open to faculty, staff, students and community members free of charge.

What is the Train the Trainer Institute?

The MVP Institute is a two-day leadership training designed for undergraduate and graduate students to learn more about the bystander education model in bullying and gender violence prevention and how to incorporate into personal and professional settings.  The Institute consists of two phases.  In Phase I, individuals go through the training as participants and in Phase II, participants practice facilitating the MVP curriculum with peers. The MVP curriculum is broken into four educational units:  battery, gender roles, alcohol and consent, and sexual harassment.  Upon completion of the Institute, participants are certified to utilize MVP in their respective practicuums, field experiences, and vocations.

Who should attend the Train the Trainer Institute?

University students in leadership roles on campus are encouraged to attend.  In addition, students preparing to seek careers in education, athletics, family services, youth development, law enforcement and criminology and human services are encouraged to participate in this leadership opportunity.

Who Should Attend the "Train the Trainer" Institute?

This hands-on, two-day workshop is designed for faculty and staff who are interested in knowing more about bullying and gender violence prevention and how to incorporate knowledge and skills associated with bystander education into their respective course offerings, orientations and departmental trainings.  Community professionals and prevention specialists are also invited to attend.

The 39th Annual Carl Becker Memorial Lecture in History will be presented by Geoffrey Parker, who currently holds the Andreas Dorpalen chair at Ohio State University. The title of his lecture is “The Crisis of the 1590s Reconsidered: Philip II, His Enemies, and Climate Change.” The lecture is free and open to the public.
