Merchant of Venice
Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 04/11/2013 - 7:30pmIn this comedy, Shakespeare weaves together two ancient folk myths, one involving a vengeful, greedy Jewish creditor trying to exact a pound of flesh from a Christian over an unpaid debt, the other involving a marriage suitor’s choice among three chests to win the hand of his beloved. How does one harmonize the Elizabethan anti-Semitic portrayal of Shylock with the fairy-tale romance of Portia and Bassanio? And then make this experience relevant and comedic to a contemporary audience? Join us as we celebrate the final production in our exploration of politically-themed work.

Mathematics Colloquium: Arithmetical Similarities of Graph Coverings
Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 04/10/2013 - 3:15pmWe will explore finite graph coverings from an arithmetical perspective. After discussing how a prime cycle in a graph splits into prime cycles in a covering graph, we will characterize the situation when any prime cycle in a graph has a similar splitting type in two covers. Using this characterization, we present a method of constructing pairs of non-isomorphic graphs that have the same Ihara zeta function.

Lecture: Changing Course in Global Agriculture
Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 04/08/2013 - 7:00pmHans Herren, World Food Prize winner and president of the Millennium Institute, will present "Changing Course in Global Agriculture."
Agriculture must be at the core of any vision that sees all people having enough healthy food in a healthy environment. Today, 870 million people suffer from hunger in a world of food production surpluses and pre- and post-retail waste while unsustainable agricultural practices lead to environmental problems and threaten the health of our planet. Ecological and resilient agricultural practices conserve ecosystems and biodiversity and reduce environmental degradation. Small-holder farmers, when practicing sustainable agriculture, are the best stewards of our ecosystem.
