Discussion of Ismael Beah’s A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, a 2008 memoir about the 11-year civil war in Sierra Leone and the scourge (and rehabilitation) of child soldiers.

The UNI/AEA 267 Regional Physics Competition (formerly known as Physics Olympics) is a series of six competitive physics events for high school students in grades 9-12. The competition stresses creativity and ingenuity as well as understanding of physics related principles and is intended to stimulate interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Events include:  self-propelled catapult, mousetrap car, bridge building, soda straw arm, challenge problem and material recovery facility (MRF). The MRF is sponsored by the Iowa Recycling Association. Regional winners and runners-up advance to the State of Iowa Physics Competition held on April 11, 2012 at the McLeod Center.

Featuring acclaimed author Dr. Jack Shaheen, the film explores a long line of degrading images of Arabs--from Bedouin bandits and submissive maidens to sinister sheikhs and gun-wielding "terrorists"--along the way offering devastating insights into the origin of these stereotypic images, their development at key points in U.S. history and why they matter so much today. 

A competition showcasing outstanding recent works by students in the Department of Art. The juror this year is Gilbert Vicario, senior curator at the Des Moines Art Center. The awards ceremony will take place Monday, March 19 at 7 p.m. in room 111, Kamerick Art Building; opening reception will follow.

Direct from the world famous Apollo Theatre in New York City, Dreamgirls comes to the Gallagher-Bluedorn in a brand new, sensational stage production. The University of Iowa Faculty Piano Quartet will visit UNI to present a recital. This guest ensemble features University of Iowa faculty artists Scott Conklin, violin, Elizabeth Oakes, viola, Hannah Holman, cello and Rene Lecuona, piano. This event is free and open to the public.

Planetarium shows at 7 and 8 p.m. lasting about 30 minutes each. Free and open to the the public.

Mitch Patterson, project manager of foundry sands for HA International, will present "Chemistry in Industry:  Manufacturing and Foundry Applications."

Under the direction of UNI percussion professor Randy Hogancamp, the UNI Percussion & West African Drum Ensembles will offer the first of their spring concerts along with UNI’s Taiko drum ensemble Kaji-Daiko. This event is free and open to the public.
