An Unlikely Friendship: Donna Red Wing and Bob Vander Plaats

Speakers at this event are Donna Red Wing, head of One Iowa, and Bob Vander Plaats, head of The Family Leader, two leaders with opposing views on gay marriage. Their story has been featured in the Des Moines Register (Dec. 31, 2014) and Washington Post (July 4, 2015). Sponsored by UNI American Democracy Project and the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President; co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Black Hawk and Bremer Counties. A reception will follow the presentation; free and open to the public.

Constitution Day - The 50th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act: Progress, Problems, Perils?

Donna Hoffman, political science, will moderate a panel that will discuss the history, progress and problems associated with the Voting Rights Act. Panelists are Michael Blackwell, John Johnson, Paul Pate and Scott Peters. The League of Women Voters of Black Hawk-Bremer Counties is a co-sponsor. A reception will follow the presentation; free and open to the public.

Making Government Whistleblower Laws Work

U.S. Senator Charles Grassley and Iowa State Senator Jeff Danielson will discuss whistleblower protections from the federal and state perspectives. Both view whistleblowing as an important check and balance on government. Grassley has a long record of working for protections for whistleblowers. In 1984 he authored updates to the federal False Claims Act and co-authored the 1989 federal Whistleblower Protection act and its updates in 2012. Danielson helped lead an effort in 2014 to strengthen Iowa’s whistle-blower law. A reception precedes the program at 7:30 a.m.; free and open to the public.

Observatory Show

View the night sky through the computer controlled telescope at the Earth and Environmental Science Observatory. This event is free and open to the public. Meet before 9 p.m. to get to the observatory (near the polar bear). No late admissions will be allowed; no food or drink and no cellphones or other electronic devices can be used during the observatory visit.
