Shrek The Musical

Thu, 11/08/2012 - 7:30pm

Shrek The Musical, based on the Oscar®-winning DreamWorks film that started it all, bring the hilarious story of everyone's favorite ogre to life on stage.  In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre-not a handsome prince-shows up to rescue a feisty princess.  Throw in a donkey who won't shut up, a villain with a short temper, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero.  Luckily, there's one on hand...and his name is Shrek.

Featuring a terrific score of 19 all-new songs, big laughs, great dancing and breathtaking scenery, Shrek The Musical is "far, far, and away the funniest new musical on Broadway!"  Shrek The Musical is part romance, part twisted fairy tale and all irreverent fun for everyone!

Strayer-Wood Theatre comedy: "November"

Sun, 11/04/2012 - 7:30pm - 10:00pm

Under the direction of Jay Edelnant, David Mamet’s fiendishly funny, over-the-top comedy November offers no mercy in its satirical stab at American politics. Meet President Charles Smith, the most corrupt, inept hack ever to sit in the Oval Office. It’s the final days of his bid for a second term, but the country is a mess and his poll numbers are “lower than Gandhi’s cholesterol.” Toss in a lesbian speechwriter longing to marry her sweetheart on national television, a cynical chief of staff, Thanksgiving turkeys awaiting pardon, and enough shady backroom scheming to make even Bernie Madoff blush, and you’ve got an ideal way to gear up for the 2012 election.

Imani Winds

Sun, 10/28/2012 - 3:00pm

Grammy-nominated Imani Winds redefines the boundaries of the traditional wind quintet.  This adventurous group of musicians has carved out a distinct presence in the classical music world.  With two member composers and a deep commitment to commissioning new work, the group is enriching the traditional wind quintet repertoire while meaningfully bridging European, American, African, and Latin American traditions.  Guided by their namesake "Imani," Swahili for "faith," their music engages audiences in performances that "sparkle with tonal warmth" and "polished ensemble playing" (The New York Times).

Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto with Dror Biran

Sat, 10/27/2012 - 7:30pm

Dror Biran joins the WCFSO for one of the best-loved works of all time, Tchaikovsky's exceptionally romantic and vibrant First Piano Concerto.

The folk-influenced sounds of the Tchaikovsky concerto play off of a pair of rare and exquisite orchestral gems including Zoltán Kodály's Variations on a Hungarian Folksong (subtitled "The Peacock"), a colorful romantic orchestral setting of Hungarian folk music.  Ingolf Dahl's Quodlibet on American Folk Tunes and Folk Dances is another uncommon symphonic treasure drawing on American folk songs to encapsulate the exuberant and expansive nature of our own country's cultural history.
