Cinderella Russian National Ballet Theatre

Sat, 01/26/2013 - 7:30pm

“Cinderella” is the classic story of the lowly stepdaughter who is tormented by her cruel stepmother and stepsisters, but with the help of her fairy godmother, gets to go to the ball at the palace, and eventually wins the heart of her prince. The sumptuous costumes, jubilant music by Prokofiev, lush scenery and hilarious double-roles of the stepsisters make the Russian National Ballet Theatre’s presentation of this masterpiece and evening not to be missed.

The Russian National Ballet Theatre was founded in Moscow in the late 1980s during the transitional period of Perestroika, when many great dancers and choreographers of the former Soviet Union began exercising their newfound freedom by starting new, vibrant companies, bringing a fresh, invigorating spirit to the timeless tradition of classical ballet.

Conrad Tao

Sun, 11/18/2012 - 3:00pm

Praised by renowned music critic Harris Goldsmith as “the most exciting prodigy to ever come my way” (Musical America), 17-year-old Chinese-American pianist Conrad Tao was discovered playing children’s songs on the piano at 18 months of age. Born in Urbana, Illinois, the 2012 Gilmore Young Artist gave his first recital at age four and by eight had made his concerto debut. Last fall Tao filled in for pianist Louis Lortie and gave a solo recital on one day’s notice in Fort Worth’s Bass Performance Hall presented by Cliburn Concerts that critics raved as being “technically brilliant” (Star-Telegram), and a “gripping performance by turns mysterious and defiant” (Dallas Morning News). And, in his debut with the Detroit Symphony in January Tao’s performance was described as “blazing…and hair-raising in its technical brilliance.”

Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires

Sat, 11/17/2012 - 7:30pm

Born in Gainesville, Florida, in 1948 and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Charles spent the better part of his childhood living on the streets. One of the more optimistic moments of his childhood came in 1962, when his sister took him to see James Brown at The Apollo. Brown's energy formed a lasting impression on Charles. He was discovered by Daptone Records performing a James Brown act and collaborated with the band The Bullets (later they disbanded to become The Budos Band) to release a few singles. After more recording and playing his first album No Time for Dreaming is now out on Dunham Records. In the meantime, Charles has been touring with The Menahan Street Band and honing his passion as a singer and an entertainer. If you know Charles today, then you know one of the most loving, humble, honest and genuine human beings you will ever know. Charles Bradley spent most of his life dreaming for a better one, an and now there is no more time for dreaming, just time for singing, dancing and loving.
