Justin Hines

Fri, 03/08/2013 - 7:30pm

A musician who may change how you look at the world.  Canadian singer/songwriter Justin Hines’ latest album, “Days to Recall,” marks his American debut. His music is uplifting and heartfelt, overflowing with natural optimism, although he is no stranger to challenges. Hines has Larsen Syndrome, a joint dislocation condition that confines him to a wheelchair. He jokes, “I’ll never be a guy who relies on choreography,” but his live performances are delivered with honest emotion and a passion for music that shines through every song.

Sounds of Iowa

Sat, 03/02/2013 - 7:30pm

Celebrate the first glimmers of spring with a sweeping narrative concert featuring our area’s finest young musicians and Cedar Falls resident Bill Witt’s prairie photography.

Inspired by the sounds of our state, Jonathan Chenette’s Rural Symphony is a whimsical depiction of life on the Iowa prairie. Antonín Dvorák’s American Suite, composed just after his stay in nearby Spillville, takes a panoramic approach to the richness of our country’s folk music. Aaron Copland’s signature poignant voice is front and center in rarely performed music from his opera The Tender Land, inspired by Midwestern American farm life.

Past & Present with Hunter Capoccioni

Sat, 02/02/2013 - 7:30pm

This beautiful showcase of innovative masterpieces past and present features principal bassist of the WCFSO, UNI faculty member, and artistic director and founder of the Cedar Valley Chamber Music Festival, Hunter Capoccioni performing John Harbison’s Concerto for Bass Viol. Harbison, one of today’s most influential American composers, brings to life one of the most powerful and rarely featured orchestral instruments.

Framed by Samuel Barber’s Medea ballet suite and orchestral music from Mozart’s opera La Clemenza de Tito, this intriguing program invites a conversation between the past and the present. Barber’s characteristically romantic melodies are fused with the Greek mythological tale of Medea. Mozart’s final historical opera, La Clemenza de Tito, rounds out this thought-provoking display of the ways musical language combines past and present.
