School of Music

Under the direction of faculty artist Chris Merz and graduate student conductors, the School of Music will present a jazz combos concert. This event is free and open to the public.

The sights and sounds of some of opera’s greatest hits and perennial favorites will come to life in the Great Hall of the Gallagher-Bluedorn.  UNI Opera (Sandra Walden, director) will join forces with the Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Rebecca Burkhardt, to perform a variety of opera and operetta favorites. Opera is filled with moments of great drama, uproarious comedy, unrequited love, and the occasional happy ending, and this evening of opera will offer a taste of each! Hum along with your favorite arias, tap your foot to a lively chorus, and join us for a festive evening to remember. Following in the tradition of UNI Opera’s performances of Die Fledermaus (2011) and Die Zauberflöte (2012), Gallagher-Bluedorn will once more be filled with the sounds of opera!

The UNI School of Music Suzuki School will present a recital featuring Suzuki faculty artists. This event is free and open to the public.

The Beta Nu Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and the UNI School of Music invite you and your band to the 58th Annual Tallcorn Jazz Festival and 62nd Sinfonian Dimensions in Jazz Concerts will be held on February 15 and 16 at 7:15 p.m. Donny McCaslin, Grammy-nominated saxophonist and composer, will be the featured guest artist at this year’s event. Under the direction of UNI professor of flute Angeleita Floyd, the Northern Iowa Flute Choir and Flute Studio will present its annual concert. This event is free and open to the public.

Members of the UNI Cantorei, Wind Symphony and Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra will collaborate under the direction of conductor John Len Wiles to present Bach’s Herr Jesu Christ, wahr' mensch und Gott, BWV 127. This event is free and open to the public.

The Northern Festival of Bands, an annual honor band festival for high school band students, which typically hosts over 40 schools and over 250 individual students, will be held February 7-9, 2013. The event will feature performances by the UNI Wind Symphony and UNI Symphonic Band on Friday evening as well as Saturday afternoon’s performance featuring solo competition winners, the festival’s percussionist groups, Festival Concert Band and Festival Symphony Band. Friday’s concert is at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Featuring an exciting and diverse group of UNI School of Music faculty artists, this concert will kick off the spring 2013 Spotlight Series concerts. Hosted by Dmitri Vorobiev, this concert will feature faculty artists John Hines, bass, Polina Khatsko, piano, Amanda McCandless, clarinet, Chris Merz, saxophone, Randy Grabowski, trumpet, and Chris Buckholz, trombone, as well as selected outstanding School of Music students. UNI School of Music faculty artist Amanda McCandless will coordinate this event, featuring master classes and performances by guest artists Keith Lemmons, Kimberly Cole Luevano and Daniel Friberg with UNI faculty pianist Robin Guy. This event is free and open to the public, but does require registration.
