Summer Camp: Ultimate Sumo Robots

Logistics: $345.00 registration fee includes programming, use of lab tools and supplies, and camper's own (to take home) sumo robot kit (to take home). Campers should bring a sack lunch and snacks daily and wear comfortable clothing.

Build your own fighting sumo robot in just one week! Design, build, program, and test your own mini-sumo robot then challenge fellow campers to a match of power and wits in the sumo ring (like Japanese Sumo wrestlers). Can your robot expel all challengers while holding its ground? Everyone will exit the ring and the week with new design and programming skills, knowledge of autonomous vehicle robotics and their own robot to take home.

Special Note: This camp is open to beginner through advanced robotics levels and may be repeated for more advanced experiences. Repeat campers who return with their robot receive a half-price discount on registration.*

State of Iowa Physics Competition

The Department of Physics hosts the State of Iowa Physics Competition. Participating high school students qualified at regional competitions and represent the top teams from Area Education Agencies across the state. The competition is a series of five events that stress creativity, ingenuity and an understanding of physics-related ideas and is intended to stimulate interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Events include catapult, mouse trap car, bridge building, soda-straw arm and challenge problem.

UNI/AEA 267 Regional Physics Competition

The University of Northern Iowa Department of Physics is hosting the UNI/Area Education Agency 267 Regional Physics Competition. High school students from Cedar Falls, Denver, Dike-New Hartford, Dunkerton, East Buchanan, Fairbank, Gilbertville, Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Janesville, Jesup, La Porte City, Nashua-Plainfield, Sumner, Traer, Tripoli, Waterloo, Winthrop and other area schools are expected to participate.

The Physics Competition is a series of five competitive physics events for high school students in grades 9-12. The competition stresses creativity and ingenuity as well as understanding of physics related principles and is intended to stimulate interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).  Events include catapult, mousetrap car, toothpick bridge, soda straw arm and challenge problem. 

Regional winners and runners-up advance to the State of Iowa Physics Competition hosted by the UNI Department of Physics and held on April 16, 2015 at the McLeod Center.
