Dick Haynes, senior vice president of research at Frank N. Magid Associates, Inc., has been directly involved in steering the content and style of major television and cable networks for the past three decades. As head of commercial research at Magid, he  and his team analyze the changing media landscape for corporations and investors in home video, cable TV, direct satellite and the multiple platforms of new media. He is also a leading proponent of research-based brand development. During his talk, he will detail his rigorous research and content analysis process and offer an inside glimpse into the media research profession. Haynes received his Ph.D. in mass communications research from Bowling Green State University and was director of the Mass Communications Department at the University of Mississippi.

The UNI Forensics team, in conjunction with the League of Women Voters, will host an audience debate on health care. Using the resolution: "RESOLVED: The U.S. Federal Government should repeal the current federal health care plan (known as Obamacare)." This event is an opportunity for UNI students to debate one of the most important political issues in the United States. The debate will feature members of the UNI debate team who will use suggestions from the public to shape their debate speeches. Audience members can submit questions and debate topics to the UNI Speech and Debate Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/events/247155845340693/) by noon on Dec. 6. The College of Humanities and Fine Arts Senate is pleased to announce that Dr. Paul Siddens, associate professor of communication studies, is the recipient of the 2011 CHFA Faculty Excellence Award (awarded prior to the merger of CHFA & CNS).  He will give a lecture titled “From Funny Books to Graphic Novels: Teaching and Researching Comics.”  This event is free and open to the public with a reception following.
