Chemistry and Biochemistry

Katie Mauger-Sonnek will give her M.S. Chemistry thesis presentation "Colorful Crystalline Structures and Adsorption Properties of Cobalt Nitrat eand 4,4'-Bipyridine Metal Organic Frameworks." 

Victoria Moran, UNI graduate and dental student at the University of Iowa School of Dentistry, will present "All About Dental School."

Ernesto Fuentes, Ph.D., from the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Iowa, will present "Ph.D. in Bio/Chemistry:  A Great Foundation for Diverse Careers."

"The Qualities We Seek in Medical School Applicants" will be presented by James Choi and Kathi Huebner. Choi is from the anesthesiology department and Huebner is director of admissions, both at the University of Iowa's Carver College of Medicine.

Richard Barajas, director of admissions at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, will present "Pharmacy:  Careers and Navigating the Admissions Process."

UNI Alumus Nate Adams, applications developer at Integrated DNA Technologies, will present "My Life as a Corporate Shill:  STEM Careers in the Private Sector."

UNI alumnus Dr. Brian Gruver, lab manager at Koch Nitrogen Company, will present "Hydrogen Transfer - Large and Small."

Kathryn Mauger-Sonnek, master's degree candidate in chemistry, will present "Structure and Sorption Properties of Metal Organic Frameworks."

UNI student affiliates of the American Chemical Society (ACS) will host a “Halloween House”. There will be a variety of Halloween-themed demonstrations in rooms such as the “Devil’s Den," “Frankenstein’s Lab,” “Mummy’s Yummies” and “Grossology Lab." The event is free and invites children of all ages. UNI students in costume will help children with hands-on chemistry activities, such as making liquid-nitrogen ice cream and gak. Halloween House is held in conjunction with National Chemistry Week and is a program of the ACS designed to reach the public with a positive message about chemistry.

Dr. John Talley will present "The Search for Celebrex". Talley is one of the world’s most accomplished medicinal chemists and a co-inventor of Celebrex^® and seven other drugs that have reached the marketplace.  He currently serves as chief scientific officer at St. Louis based SARmont. He received a B.A. in Science from the University of Northern Iowa in 1974 and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1979.
