What is the Math Center?
The Math
Center focuses on expanding on course content, building skill competence
and confidence, and study skills. The
Math Center is not:
- A replacement
for professor/instructor office hours. If you are having trouble with
a mathematics course, your first step is to seek your professor/instructor
and seek his/her help. Follow his/her recommendations.
- A solution
factory for graded assignments. Tutors must follow the Math Center and
the professor/instructor guidelines in assisting students with graded
work. Until the coordinator of the Center is given the specifics
by the professor/instructor, a tutor "hands-off graded work"
policy will be enforced.
- A substitute
lecture for a missed class. Tutors are not instructors and therefore
cannot lecture or teach material. They can assist
in understanding concepts, though, and clarifying confusions and misconceptions.
- A place
where weeks of classes, homework and study can be made up with a tutor
just prior to a test. At test time, priority must be given to students
that use the Center on a regular basis. It's not possible to
do well on a college mathematics or statistics exam if one has not been
working or keeping up with the material all along.
Who Can Use the Math Center?
To use the
Math Center an individual must be a currently-enrolled UNI student who
is enrolled in a Liberal Arts Core mathematics or science course. On the
first visit, students must complete a Math Center Registration Form. When
visiting the Math Center, students must bring the following:
- The official
text of the course
- Course
syllabus
- The course
assignment
Students who utilize services in the Center must
sign in and sign out each time they visit. If a student signs
in to use the Math Center and then needs to see the staff of the Writing
Center, the Reading Center or another entity in the Academic Learning
Center, they must sign out from the Math Center and sign in to
use the other service.
