UNI professor honored with presidential award
Jody Stone, a science education professor at the University of Northern Iowa, has been awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
Stone is the third professor from UNI to win a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching are the nation's highest honors for teachers of mathematics and science and are awarded annually. Awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education. Winners are selected by a panel of distinguished scientists, mathematicians and educators following an initial selection process done at the state level.
Since 1983, more than 4,100 teachers have been recognized for their contribution in the classroom and to their profession. Stone is the third professor from UNI to win this prestigious award.
"I am honored and humbled by being selected to receive this award," said Stone. "I have been blessed to be part of the best teaching and learning environment in Iowa, possibly in the nation."
For the past 34 years, Stone has taught high school chemistry at UNI's Malcolm Price Laboratory School, as well as graduate courses in science education at UNI. She has worked extensively on curriculum development using her science classroom as a laboratory for the creation and testing of new ideas, which has benefitted teachers in both Iowa and around the nation.
"I have often wondered where the magic comes from that makes being in my classroom the favorite part of my day," said Stone. "I firmly believe I have significantly impacted all of my students by creating an atmosphere in which the sky is the limit for each and every student."
Winners of the presidential award receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation and are also invited to Washington, D.C. later this month to be honored at recognition events and participate in professional development opportunities.
