Integration Bee

Basics and Rules
We
are proud to present UNI's annual Integration
Bee. This
is a contest testing the integration
skills of the contestants. In
a
competition similar to a spelling bee, students work to solve integrals
of
increasing difficulty.
Prizes:
A $100 bookstore gift certificate
will be given to the winner. Runners-up
will
receive $25 bookstore gift certificates.
When:
...in the Spring. Check the calendar
on the University of Northern Iowa's
Mathematics
website.
How to Play:
Rounds 1&2 (single elimination):
Students
will be asked one at a time to solve an integral.
Each student is given 2 minutes to complete
the integral. If
the integral is correct,
the participant advances to the next round.
Otherwise, the participant is eliminated from the
competition. If a
participant is unable to correctly
evaluate the integral within the time limit, the next participant will
have one
minute to attempt to evaluate the same integral.
If this participant cannot evaluate the
integral correctly, he/she is eliminated from the competition and a new
integral
is presented to the next participant.
Each
participant has one 'life line" which can be used in either of the
first
two rounds. The
participant may solicit advice
(not the solution) from a member of the audience.
The "adviser" has 30 seconds to
verbally communicate advice to the participant.
The participant may not write during these 30 seconds. The two minute clock stops
during this 30
second "life line".
Round 3:
If
there are more than 5 participants remaining after the first two rounds
an
additional round of single elimination will be done before proceeding
to the
final round.
Final Round:
In
the final round, the remaining participants work simultaneously on the
same
integral. The fastest is the champion! The
others are runners-up.
*Of
course, no
calculators,
computers, etc. will be allowed.*
