Strayer-Wood Theatre
Scenic Studio

Theatre UNI utilizes a large scenic studio that allows for the realization of complete scenic designs for each production. The studio contains an extensive amount of equipment for working both in wood and metal. There is also a facility devoted to the storage and organization of paint and painting supplies. There is a properties shop on a loft above the Scenic Studio which allows for the creation and storage of props in a dedicated space. The scenic studio is adjacent to the Graphics Room which houses several drawing, drafting and design classes.

The staff in the scenic studio also coordinates the lighting and sound facilities at Theatre UNI. We have three spaces that support lighting design work, including a lighting lab facility in the Acting Practice Room. Our equipment inventory is quite extensive and the number of faculty involved with lighting training makes Theatre UNI a fantastic school for learning about stage lighting. The lab in Acting Practice Room has a small grid along the ceiling and is used as the primary space for lighting design courses. Our primary performance venues, the Bertha Martin Theatre ( a black box facility) and the Strayer -Wood Theatre (a traditional proscenium space with an alternate thrust configuration) provide additional places to explore lighting and allow students and faculty to work together in professional level conditions.

We use state of the art sound equipment and software at Theatre UNI. These resources allow students to design, create and experiment with sound and to use digital software to arrange and control sound cues for productions. It is a fantastic system and a good environment to learn to use it in.
