Hazel Strayer Memorial Scholarship

Hazel Strayer took over the theatre program at UNI from Bertha Martin, but not before she did an M.A. at Columbia, worked with George Baker at Yale, and did Broadway and off-Broadway work as a costumer and wardrobe mistress. Miss Strayer thought that people who wanted to teach theatre needed to be at least twice as well prepared as theatre professionals. She is responsible for beginning the fund drive for the theater in which we now work and bringing what was the Iowa State Teacher’s College into national prominence as one of the nation’s premiere theatre education schools. She retired from teaching in 1956.
