The Drama and Theatre for Youth Emphasis is designed to help students develop the confidence, methodology, resource base, insight, experience and skill needed to support a highly creative atmosphere for providing theatre, creative drama and theatre-in-education experiences to young people in a variety of settings. Students pursuing the drama and theatre for youth emphasis have the unique opportunity to teach, work and/or perform with the Sturgis Youth Theatre, a Department of Theatre supported, community based youth theatre that provides quality productions, meaningful production experiences, and varied theatre study opportunities for the youth of Cedar Falls and the surrounding communities. This “real world” access to a thriving youth theatre in which students can apply the teaching, assessment, directing and design knowledge they are learning in class to actual stage, studio and workshop environments is part of what makes the program at UNI unique, not only in the state, but in the region, and is a primary factor as to why our graduates are highly recruited by regional youth theatres and education programs.
