Technical Requirements

To participate effectively in this workshop, you need to send and receive email. If you do not have a home computer, check with your employer to see if you may use a computer during or after work hours.

You will need regular, dependable Internet access. You will use email to interact with your instructor and other participants. Also, you will discuss and share assignments by way of our private class mailing list. Other opportunities will be provided for live chats with your instructor during optional online office hours and team chats during collaborative projects or peer feedback conferences. All assignments will be delivered by email, and your instructor will return comments by reply email.

Additionally, you will be required to view videos of teachers demonstrating actual classroom lessons as examples of "best practices". To be able to view these videos, your system will require the following:

PC Platform

  • 200 MHz or faster Intel Pentium MMX processor or equivalent
  • Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME (Final Release version), Windows NT (with Service Pack 4), or Windows 2000
  • 32 MB RAM Full Duplex Sound card and speakers 65,000-color or better video display card
  • 56Kbps or faster modem
  • Internet connection and Web browser (Internet Explorer 5.0 or later or Netscape 4.5 or later with Java support)
  • RealPlayer 8.0 Basic or later. Note: Some students have reported problems with RealOne™ which is pre-installed on many newer computers. If you have technical difficulties with it and need to download RealPlayer 8.0 Basic, click here.

MAC Platform

  • PowerPC G3 processor (233 MHz or faster)
  • Mac OS 8.5 or later
  • 128 MB RAM (256 MB recommended) and 128 MB virtual memory
  • 56Kbps or faster modem
  • Internet connection and Web browser (Internet Explorer 5.0 later or Netscape 4.5 or later with Java support)
  • RealPlayer 8.0 Basic or later

Very Important
Check that you are able to access one of the InTime videos you'll be viewing in class. View the Activity Overview for the WebQuest Solar System Colonization Project 2000 video. On the left side of the screen, you should see the streaming video with rolling text underneath (just like closed captioning on your TV). On the right side, you should see the textual information that describes the lesson. Additionally, you should be able to hear the audio.

If you have any problems accessing the video, please review the technical requirements for the workshop, especially relating to the use of RealPlayer software.
